My nearly 5 y.o. Is due to get fillings they won't do local anaesthesia they say as she is too young.
The cavity is deep and is sensitive and my question is would it hurt? Shall we wait till sedation referral comes through?^
What if give calpol beforehand?

Thank you.^

It’s deep and sensitive they won’t do it under local so the alternative is under sedation

calpol won’t do much.

im guessing you’ve never had to have a filling.

I had all my childhood fillings without an anaesthetic after one with as an adult I asked for it to done without. So much easier and pain is shorter.

moxay · 18/12/2023 21:09

@Attictroll do you mean you prefer it without anaesthetic?

@Wishiwasatailor I had them done as a child but I was older and they did local anaesthetic.

We had been on a check up and the dentist was willing to do it, but without anaesthetic even without the gel. So I'm worried it can be painful

@moxay yes I do I ask for it and I am generally Squamish. It feels painful and weird when their doing it but less so than injection and recovery

moxay · 18/12/2023 23:35

That's interesting @Attictroll I've never found injection particularly painful and recovery never bothered me.
But I've never done it without and I've always been scared of getting pains during the procedure

I’d never have a filling without an injection. I’d wait for a sedation as you might traumatise her forever.

Dynamoat · 19/12/2023 07:09

I'm always quite blunt when it comes to medical things. It needs to be done, it might hurt but needs to happen so you've got to let the professionals get on with it. I'd do a local injection and take an iPad and see if you can hold that up to distract them. I think it's more discomfort (suction etc) rather than pain so just prepare them for that.

BloodyAdultDC · 19/12/2023 07:15

If they won't do it without sedation they won't do it. 4yo dc aren't likely to 'be brave' when the dentist gets to the nerve, nor be distracted by an iPad.

Sorry OP, but after this you need to have a rethink of your dc's dental hygiene routine. It's not normal for 4yo to need fillings at all.

Did you read rhe OP?

It will really hurt, tbh I'm surprised a dentist would do it on a 4 yr old without local anaesthetic or sedation. I'd wait, although I guess it does depend on how awful the current pain is.

Pashazade · 19/12/2023 07:55

Definitely wait for sedation. If she was having more than one bit of work done it would be under general so I don't think I'd mess around with not having pain relief. Less potential trauma the better.

Blimey fillings for a 4 year old. Poor thing. Sorry can't answer about sedation etc.

Unfortunately 4/5 year olds do occasionally need fillings! Some people are more susceptible to tooth decay regardless of their diet and dental hygiene! It happened to one of my children who had exactly same dir as siblings .
OP I would definitely wait for the sedation appointment.
