DS18 terrible headaches

My son has had really bad headaches the last couple of weeks. He is usually very stoic and will carry on regardless but today had to leave college early. He also has a rash on back and was feeling faint. Been to GP today who said just dose with paracetamol, ibuprofen and rest a couple of days. GP Said it's likely migraines.

Just wondering if anyone had experience of similar with their DC either with similar symptoms or knowledge of what causes migraines.

He is otherwise very healthy, eats well, no caffeine, smoking or alcohol. He is anxious though and finding year 13 final year of A levels very pressurised. He assures me though that he doesn't have massive issues because of that.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Has he had his eyes checked in the last 12 months?

KnackeredBack · 18/12/2023 18:12

Get him on some iron supplements. Anaemia can cause headaches. My DD2 had this at the same age.

Thanks for recommendations

What was the rash like OP? Definitely not shingles?

pilates · 18/12/2023 18:55

Keep an eye on him but could be a viral rash.

Did the GP see the rash?

Hellenika · 18/12/2023 19:17

Did GP see the rash? A rash and really bad headaches are symptoms of meningitis.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/meningitis/

Symptoms of meningitisSymptoms of meningitis develop suddenly and can include:

  • a high temperature (fever)
  • being sick
  • a headache
  • a rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (but a rash will not always develop)
  • a stiff neck
  • a dislike of bright lights
  • drowsiness or unresponsiveness
  • seizures (fits)
These symptoms can appear in any order. You do not always get all the symptoms.

Meningitis

Read about meningitis, an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Find out about the symptoms, vaccines and treatments.

Yes GP saw the rash. Said it's not meningitis apparently but that was the first thing I thought as well

I think I'd be calling 111 for a second opinion.

MigGirl · 18/12/2023 19:32

That looks like a viral rash. I would seek a second opinion.

Migraine is classed as one sided headache often with nausea and light sensitivity. Other symptoms can be visual disturbance, tingling on one side of face/arm vomiting. Feeling very tired and rundown after the headache has resolved. The only true way to tell if it is Migraine is to take a triptain (these are not painkillers) if it clears the head pain then it is Migraine.
