I think she may have a cold. Her right eye is leaking and is red and swollen, her nose wil not stop running and she has a temperature of 38c. Normally her temp is 36.5c. She is slightly unsettled, but otherwise alright. I don't want to bother the out of hours doctor, is there anything I can do to help her get comfortable. DD is 4 months old.

TIA

a wee pudding, make sure she is raised when asleep and not lying flat, might help her breath more easily. you could put in a karvol plug in thing or put some olbas oil on a muslin near to her when she's sleeping

also heard someone say karvol or similar on soles of feet works but never tried it myself

am not sure about swollen red eye though, if worried phone NHS 24

hope she's better soon

thanks dizzydixies, DH bought a calpol diffuser last night for her to help her suffles. I will try the karvel on her feet though, and see if it works.

Saline nose drops (they are quite safe, only sterile salt water) can help to clear the snot. She must be so bunged up that the tear duct must be blocked.

Colled, boiled water and clean cotton pads are good for gently cleaning the eye. Wash hands, saturate and squeeze cotton pad and wipr the eye once only from inside to outside and then discard the pad.

Calpol is ok once they are over 12 weeks as far as I remember. Give plenty of extra drinks, and use the nose drops before each feed so that she is able to suck.

COOLED. Must go and look for my specs.

thanks 3littlefrogs, I will do that now as her eye really is watering. Where can I get saline drops from?

You should be able to get them at any chemist.
I am going to make a confession here - I used to make my own with a level teaspoon of salt to a pint of boiled water, cooled to lukewarm. I used to saturate a piece of clean cotton wool, squeeze it out just enough that it was wet enough to drip a couple of drops gently into their snotty nose, and a few seconds later they would sneeze and an amazing quantity of gunk would fly out!!! I never poked or prodded their noses, and TBH I couldn't see the difference between my home made drops and the ones I could buy in Boots.

Having said all that, if her eye gets sticky, inflamed, or looks infected, you might need to see GP to get antibiotic ointment or drops.

(If you have to put antibiotic eye drops in a child's eye, have a nice tasting drink ready for them, because the drops run down the tear duct, and can get into their throat and they taste absolutely foul).
