Really bad knee pain! Help!

I've been having a really star ge lain in my right knee. Its just below my knee cap, kind of my shin? It hurts so bad when bending my knee or after a period of immobility. I've had it for about six weeks. Some days it's worst then others and some days my knee will be giving me super sharp achey pains when just resting. Its not hot to touch, it's not swollen, it's not tender to touch. Its like a stiff painful feeling mostly on movement. My GP said just leave it and let it heal. I don't even recall banging it or anything. It just started hurting one day. Do s anyone know what it could be? I am overweight, very overweight. I know that's probably not helping and I am trying to lose weight. But if it was directly weight related surely it would be painful in both knees and not just one? Anyone had similar issues? And know what it could be? I have anxiety and have made up all sorts of dreadful illnesses in my head.

It is most likely related to your weight. We all favour one side of the body when standing or walking, which puts pressure more on one side.

I cannot stress enough how much losing weight will benefit you.

Do not get to middle age carrying the weight, you will be crippled and miss out on so so much of life.

Knuckle down, lose the weight, get fit and all those pains will disappear.

I've had arthritis in my knees since my early 30s...

Thanks for your reply. I know that my weight is a factor. I'm currently 18 stones. Which I know is a lot! I know I need to lose the weight but 8 stones seems really un-doable.

My guess would be patella tendinopathy? Have a google see if it matches.

Thanks, I've had a quick look and Im not sure. I'm not active enough to caud such an injury I don't think, and it's not painful to touch. But it is painful on bending and extending, and it is in the same area described.

I’d guess arthritis, with the stiffness on immobility and lack of trauma. I’ve just been diagnosed - one knee started giving me jip last summer and was how you describe. Only the other knee (the worst affected with arthritis) came on with more intense pain and with the swelling and heat etc too).

obviously, I’m not a doctor.
I’d be finding out how long you need to wait for further investigations and how you can treat it in between (ice/rest/elevate etc).

maybe a pain diary for doctors?

You can also self refer for physio i believe - which might give you more info?

I'd say this too, having had it in my 30s.

Now I'm mid-60s and just been diagnosed with arthritis in one knee, which feels completely different. Arthritis feels like clicking and grinding, good days and bad days, intense stinging inside the joint that wakes me at night when I move an inch.

MrsTopaz · 15/12/2023 22:11

Fat pad impingement..Or knee arthritis (less likely at your age I would say), retro patella irritation? All falls into anterior knee pain umbrella. The only way to know really is to see a physio and do a proper assessment. They will be able to help for sure. See if you can self refer in your area.

Obviously weight loss is part of a long term solution, but you still need to reduce the pain in the short term. I have had knee pain and the physio diagnosed patellofemoral pain syndrome. I was given some exercises which definitely helped. You could ask your GP to refer you to a physio. I would also be reluctant to assume it's just arthritis. A knee X ray will help your GP see whether any arthritis is actually enough to cause your pain or whether there might be another cause.

My knee pain was Bursitis, very painful it just disappeared after about 4 weeks.

It's nearly impossible to get knees treated on the NHS unless you arrive at A&E with it in pieces. I see a private consultant (injury which required surgery and will require a total replacement but not on the NHS as I'm too young!) He says for every 1lb you are overweight you placec an extra 7lbs of pressure through your knee. So weight loss is definitely going to help - do it in stages don't say the big number as you'll get disheartened- start with 1/2 a stone, then another etc...

If you press your GP you will go on a waiting list for physio. After a physio sees you you 'may' be referred to a consultant but you might not. I had a very visible injury and because I was looking at 16 weeks to even see a physio I paid to go private. Expensive but worth it!

Have you started any different medication lately? I was put on statins and after about 2 weeks got awful calf pain and a week or so later a very painful knee. Hurts to put weight on it or walk any distance. I have a feeling that the statins triggered it. Pain now for 6 weeks. Never had this problem before.
