Hip arthroscopy surgery

MrsH497 · 15/12/2023 14:13

Hello, I'm booked in to have my first hip arthroscopy surgery in January. Has anyone had it? Any recommendations for surgery essentials?
I have bilateral hip dysplasia and labral hip tears. They won't do hip replacements as I'm only 37 unless when they get in and find the joint is worse than expected.

Any help and advice appreciated.

Thank you x

@MrsH497 good luck for your surgery. I am on the waiting list for this and very, very nervous about it so do let me know how you get on. There are some good groups on Facebook which have some great advice and personal experiences. Just search hip labral tear support.

Hey! Pre op is tomorrow and I am getting really nervous. I've got 1 toddlers so the recovery could be interesting! I will let you know how it goes and how the recovery goes. I'm not going in with hugely high expectations then I can't end up too disappointed.

Keep me posted, I'll be thinking of you! As I understand it, the most important part is doing the physio and rehab after. Do you know how you tore your labrum? Is it from dysplasia? And if so, how was that diagnosed?

MrsH497 · 28/12/2023 18:00

@garlictwist the consultant said it was probably from the dysplasia because my joints are misshapen. I had an xray which diagnosed the dysplasia then an mri which confirmed that and then diagnosed the labrum tears.

Got my pre op tomorrow so it's all getting real now!

@MrsH497 Good luck! See you on the other side :)

I had a hip arthroscopy a few years ago, had a labral tear that was repaired. Unfortunately 6 weeks later I had to have another op to do a debridement as the repair failed.
After the second op my pain has been less but the joint still bothers me a bit. I've had 5 left knee and 2 right knee surgeries as well, all issues from flat feet and dislocating knee caps. First op at 19 and now 41, holding off on joint replacements but struggling with pain and on 25mg butec morphine patches.

Hope your op is successful :)

Hello! So I had my surgery on the 24th, it seemed to go well. The labrum is not actually torn it's hypertrophic and he said there's early signs of wear (I was very woozy when he told me this) I don't know if this is the beginnings of arthritis.

On crutches and coping with the pain, exercises ok. Hard not being able to do much with my little ones at the moment though.

Seeing the surgeon in a couple of months to see how it's healed. Xx

My husband is going in for a hip replacement tomorrow. He's only 35 but has severe arthritis in both hips.
He's been told it'll be shit for a period but then once he's healed (and had the other one done), he'll be springing about like a new born lamb...Hope you're feeling springy OP!

AndrewGarfieldsLaptop · 30/01/2024 16:37

Hope everything went well. I'm a fellow hippie too. I had a total hip replacement in 2018!

I hope I'm allowed hip replacements soon, hopefully the arthroscopies get me closer to an "acceptable age!" And reduce my everyday pain. Hope your husband recovers well x

It's nice to meet fellow hippies. I've struggled for so many years. I know the arthroscopies aren't a magic wand but hopefully helps a bit! X

I had my first hip replacement at 27, second at 32. If you are struggling I would push for a second opinion.

Edited

I'll give the first arthroscopy a chance but if it's not helping then I'll definitely push!

@MrsH497 I ended up having 3 before my
Hip replacement. I was 33 with an 18 month old when I had the surgery!!!

CatamaranViper · 31/01/2024 15:14

Are you feeling any better OP?

What's everyone else's recovery been like who's had a hip replacement?

I'm getting there thank you, weird to say I feel like the bone where they shaved/shaped the bone during the arthroscopy is sore today. X

Amazing. The only thing I can't do is run, but I have a lot of mobility problems with my leg anyways.

@MrsH497 Just wondering how you're getting on now?

Can I ask how your dysplasia was spotted? I have had an x-ray which was clear and an MRI which showed hypertropic labrums on both sides but no FAI. I really think I have dysplasia as I have a lot of symptoms (unexplained labral damage, clicking and popping in the joint etc) but don't know where to go from here.

Hi! Im getting there slowly thank you. It is a slow recovery and I'm not sure I'm ever going to get the relief without a replacement.

My dysplasia was initially diagnosed via xray and confirmed with MRI. I'd had hip pain for 10-15 years progressively getting worse. My xray it is very clear the left is completely the wrong shape (it's a right angle) and the right side is shallower than normal if I remember rightly.

My labrum was thought to be a full thickness tear however once they got in it was actually hypertrophic which is apparently common with dysplasia. Still waiting for my post op consultation then will hopefully get the left side booked in as technically that is the worst side!

Ask to look at the xray? Ask if they've considered dysplasia and what the treatment plan is?
