Strep A - allergic to antibiotic

Adult DD has had pneumonia and after 2 different antibiotics still had a productive cough do GP sent off a sputum sample. It's positive for strep A but she is allergic to amoxicillin and the other antibiotic suggested by the hospital. She feels awful and is coming home from Uni today. She will have a chest X-ray tomorrow.
What can be done if you can't take the right antibiotic?? Is there a way to screen her for antibiotics she could take??

there will likely be plenty of other antibiotics she can take. She needs to get back in touch with her GP and push for an appropriate substitution. They can also do a sensitivity test where they grow her strep a bacteria in a lab test and then see which antibiotics will kill it.

Thanks @SeaToSki have just had an update and it's not Strep A but Strep Dysgalactiae and the microbiology consultant has said to repeat the sample and review when she's had another chest X-ray......
The results took over a week so I'd assumed they'd done the sensitivity test already. Hence the suggested antibiotics.....
Will ask GP again once the X-ray has been done.

I found this, it might be helpful to put in front of the GP and ask them what they are going to treat her with

Streptococci are facultative anaerobic Gram-positive cocci and are usually penicillin susceptible and effective treatment includes penicillin or a 3rd generation cephalosporin i.e. ceftriaxone is recommended bacteraemia and vancomycin in the case of severe beta-lactam allergy [5].

Amoxcillin is a penicillin, which is why she cant have that (but they would have recommended it). What is the other antibiotic she is allergic to?

They were going to use moxifloxacin but she had an adverse reaction to levofloxacin in hospital when they first diagnosed her pneumonia. At that time they put her on doxycycline then another ?cycline but still persistent productive cough......

So a cephalosporin antibiotic is a different group to the penicillins and fluroquinalones (the two that she has had a reaction to). So they should probably try one of them.

hope she is feeling better soon. You might also try giving her some mega doses of vit d, c and zinc as all are needed for immune action against infections

you’re best off taking real-life-HCP advice from people who’ve seen the results and sensitivities rather than people on the internet. The appropriate antibiotic will depend on sensitivities (which will have been done if they know what the bug is) and what the allergic reaction is, how sick she is etc. If a consultant microbiologist has been involved they’ll have already considered all the very basic stuff suggested by PPs above.

Just a quick report that the consultant microbiologist prescribed and antibiotic which is making her feel really nauseous but no allergic reaction. Only a 5 day course so hoping that's enough to beat the chest infection - she's had it since November!!
