I was diagnosed in lockdown after having lots of under-rib pain on my right hand side. Nagging a lot of the time, but then agonising if I bent to sharply from the waist.
I had an ultrasound and then a phone message left from the gp telling me that I had NAFLD and that I should aim to lose weight carefully and steadily. No crash diets.

I've lost nearly 3 stone since then and still have the nagging from time to time, but no more stabbing horrible pain. No mention of any follow up for blood tests or checking for pre-diabetes etc.

YNK · 10/12/2023 22:53

NAFLD is a reversible symptom of B12 deficiency and CFS is also a common (and reversible) feature.

It seems likely that you are not having enough injections to resolve these reversable conditions.

No but plenty of professional experience with it.

A ketogenic diet is exceptionally effective for reversing this.

That’s interesting. I was first diagnosed with it halfway through a year on the Atkins diet. I was having gut problems and was referred because a general blood test showed a raised ALT measurement.

Twenty years and a couple of stones heavier and it seems to be resolving, as judged by normal Fibroscan, liver biopsy a few years ago showing “minimal scarring” and improved ALTs.

I’d blamed myself for going on such an odd diet (Boots pharmacy refused to sell the strips so you could check that you were “in ketosis” until Boots generally started selling Atkins’ products) but perhaps that wasn’t the reason.

They tested me for pernicious anemia but said i dont have it.
B12 is getting tested again next week.
No offer of injection

Meh

There is no test that can rule out PA.
Levels are irrelevant once you supplement either with pills or injections.
Failure of absorption is a very serious condition and you should be receiving injections.
The group I posted will still be able to help since we are very aware of this problem with diagnosis and testing.

I was a very premature baby ( 9 weeks early ) & my body was noted as being bad @ absorbing iron
So i had iron iv direct into my vein this yr

Re b12 - i addee extra potato and eggs into my diet
With some tablets too.

To 379..

Last year when i had ebv //glandular fever - b12 was 820...

Ebv has caused all sorts of issues

Theres an ebv and NAFLD link

I take 2000 iu vit d now

OP posts:
worldwidetravel2017 · 11/12/2023 11:17

I was diagnosed a few years ago after an ultrasound to see why I had constant abdominal bloating

They didn't even see me after or give me specific advice, just left a leaflet at reception for me

Am wondering now if I should be controlling my diet...?

If you have NAFLD then good to reduce fried foods and fatty foods

Good to get your liver bloods checked etc -

The liver trust are very helpful

Nafld can be reversed with diet and weight loss

worldwidetravel2017 · 11/12/2023 14:13

As I said, levels are irrelevant once supplements have been taken.
Also diet will not fix malabsorption.
B12 is only in meat eggs fish and dairy. There is no B12 in veg.
Nutritional yeast contains B12 analogues (inactive B12) which blocks the absorption of active B12.
You will get help in the group I linked for information and getting the correct treatment to resolve your conditions.

jackstini · 11/12/2023 18:00

Thanks @worldwidetravel2017 I will start having a look at diet etc.

My BMI is about 27 so could do with losing about half a stone anyway

They have not checked my liver bloods/B12 since diagnosis and didn't give me any info re foods/drinks

Often they check bloods at time of diagnosis / to check/ clarify

Worthwhile asking them to do a liver function test now anyway
