Very Heavy Period

I just wondered how much clotting is normal during periods?
I have never experienced clotting before, but since this morning, I have had several thick clots of blood, and my period is so much more heavier than normal.
At what point does it become something to worry about?

If you are real pain where you are doubled over and you are havinf Sanitary failure (ie you have to get up in the middle of the night to change a towel or if you are changing tampons every hour) then I would go to have it checked out.

have you recently come off the pill (or gone on it?) because that can be a reason. Also is your cycle very long?

It could also be a miscarriage. Sometimes you can be pregnant and not realise and be a few days late.

Clotting is quite normal but if you are worried I would make an appointment with your GP to discuss it.

Not in any severe pain thankfully, and did a test which came back BFN. Might do another just in case x

Dear chinchi,

How old are you? I'm 37 (which seems so old/odd, as I first got on mumsnet at 30 and was rather average-to-young back then!), and my last 2 periods have been horrendous: changing "super" tampons every hour, and enormous clots--like a murder scene!

Someone else my age is experiencing something similar, but worse

I hate even to think about this as a possibility, but could it be something like "periomenopause" which can start about 10 yrs before proper menopause (as I understand it). ?

I don't, however, think it's a call-the-doctor kind of thing, but do follow it.

And in my case def NOT miscarriages. . .(to respond to dettajnr)

Have you started any medication recently? Or changed anything health wise?

Cam all have an effect.
