Worries over blood tests

I had some blood tests at the beginning of the week. I was called today and told the GP wanted to discuss the results with me in a routine appointment, there aren’t any appointments available until 22nd December. I am going to be fretting until then. I’m in Wales so no NHS app. Could I call the surgery and ask them to give me the numbers at least or will they not do that?

There’s no way they’ll give them to you over the phone - they dont know if it’s you! You could maybe go into the surgery to ask but then again- doubtful they’ll oblige. I think you need to reassure yourself that the the gp doesn’t want to see you urgently so it really cant be too awful. Chin up x

They can't give you the number over the phone. The receptionists aren't allowed. If there was something scary in them or which needed to happen urgently, they would have given you an emergency appointment.

They were testing hormones, prolactin and thyroid. I expect my prolactin levels are high as it would explain other symptoms. Probably nothing life threatening but I would quite like to know for sure.

Does your surgery do econsult? Ours is happy to respond to questions like that in 48hrs

I've never not been able to get the GP receptionist to print my blood tests out when I've gone in with ID and asked.

RougeFraise · 08/12/2023 16:00

You can go in and ask for a copy.

Secondtonaan · 08/12/2023 16:03

Mine would email to me if I asked receptionist.

As pp have said if it was urgent they have seen you sooner. Try not to worry but I know how you feel!

They do give out over the phone if they feel able to do so. But usually they read out the GP's ' action' ie see in surgery, no action etc.
your bloods aren't routine and menopausal/ hormonal type bloods need to be interpreted with age etc so would be difficult to convey. Usually the levels are normal or post menopausal. Thyroid blood test if deranged is not urgent problem so could also be that. Think it's one of those easier to discuss in person.

I checked mine on the nhs app, you could probably do that

I recently had blood tests and the receptionist went through them with me over the phone. She told me the ones that were in normal range and one that was elevated and that the GP would discuss it with me. It helped to calm my nerves as I had to wait a few more days for an appointment.

I feel like they would call you in sooner if any of the results were concerningor necessitated treatment.
