Very fine rash all over chest and back?

Lomond · 14/03/2008 10:39

Hope someone can help. DD (4yrs) has had a couch and cold on and off for a few weeks. Went to docs and they said it was nothing that needed any meds.

She had a temperature last night and was complaining of a sore throat, now she has developed a very fine rash all over her body.

Any ideas on what it could be? I am hoping it is just a virus, anything I should be on the look out for?

Have to leave for a funeral soon so my apologies if I don't reply straight away.

It sounds very much like a common viral rash - my boys often get them if they've been under the weather. Do the glass test anyway just to reassure yourself. Other than that all you can do is keep an eye on it to see if it changes.

callmeovercautious · 14/03/2008 10:42

It is probably the Virus, DD gets a rash every time at the end of a cold. Very fine red spots, slightly raised?

Obviously you need to be aware of the signs of meningitus here are the signs to look for

If in any doubt go to the DR/A&E straight away.

Tiggiwinkle · 14/03/2008 10:50

Sore throat and rash can also mean Scarlet Fever. Does the rash feel rough to the touch?

Lomond · 14/03/2008 10:56

Thanks everyone! I have done the glass test and they seem to fade, so hopefully not meningitis though will keep an eye on her.

Yes, they are very fine spots, slightly raised. She has had a viral rash before but it didn't seem to cover her chest completely.

Worried about Scarlet fever now, it does feel rough to the touch. Bumpy but very fine bumps iykwim.
Any other signs with scarlet fever?

High temperature; sometimes vomiting; a white tongue with little red bits showing through which changes to a very bright red tongue during the course of the illness (so called strawberry tongue). The rash feels like sandpaper.
The main thing is with SF that you must get antibiotics, as there can be some nasty complications if not treated (kidney problems and rheumatic fever)
If in any doubt get your GP to take a look.

Tiggiwinkle · 14/03/2008 11:03

You can get some idea as to the look of the tongue if you do a google search for images. If you do go to the doctor ask about scarlet fever if he does not mention it-some GPs do not seem to recognise it these days!

Lomond · 14/03/2008 11:05

Will do, thanks for all the info.

How is your DD Lomond?

loopylou6 · 14/03/2008 15:29

sounds very much like a rash my dd has just had, the doc said it was viral and she also has a cough and a slight cold and is suffering temperatures

Lomond · 14/03/2008 17:58

Tiggiwinkle - She is not too bad, the rash does seem to have faded a bit, I keep checking her tongue and it looks alright.

Just keeping a very close eye on her. She doesn't have a temperature any more.

Hopefully it is only a viral thing. If she is not better tomorrow or gets any worse I will take her to out of hrs doc.

Tiggiwinkle - I have not been on here again as DD has been very poorly, the rash got much worse and was covering her body. Her tongue looked red and her lips all peeled today. I kept phoning NHS24 over the weekend, the first time they sent me to the local pharmacist so he could look at the rash. He thought it was just viral but she got much worse today.

I insisted she be seen at the local hospitals out of hours clinic and it turns out it is Scarlet Fever!

Thank you so much for all your advice. Without your info I would have taken the pharmacists word for it and kept giving her calpol. She is now on antibiotics.

Hooray for mumsnet!

Glad you got a proper diagnosis Lomond - hope your DD improves soon.

Can I ask where you are? I think DS1 has SF but not sure (will do docs tomorrow), but it's relatively uncommon and I wondered if it was going round in certain areas. I'm in Leeds.

Lomond · 16/03/2008 22:56

Spiker I am in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. I've not heard of anyone around here having it but have been told slapped cheek syndrome is going about. Some of the symptoms are similar.

Hope your DS gets better soon x

have you ruled out
scarletina - a rash which comes and goes with no particular explanation? (I came to the thread thinking 'Eczema' until i read the op and some of the posts...)
Get it checked out by someone medical if you are in any way worried!

amazonianwoman · 17/03/2008 14:00

DS 12mths has had a similar rash for a couple of days (+ has had cough & cold for ages), no high temps though. He scratches it when naked. Did have very red cheeks for a couple of days last week, just assumed it was his molars.

Does that sound like slapped cheek? And do you just have to ride it out? He seems OK otherwise.

Tiggiwinkle · 17/03/2008 15:04

Lomond-So glad you got her checked out! The first time one of my DSs had Scarlet Fever, I was told it was just a viral rash-he was still so poorly a couple of days later I took him back and SF was diagnosed. My DS5 has it last year-this time I recognised it straight away and because it was a weekend (typical!) I took him to the local A and E.
Have they told you to take her back in a couple of weeks for a urine test to rule out kidney complications? (They should have done). Hope she feels better soon.

Tiggiwinkle · 17/03/2008 15:06

had not has!

Lomond · 18/03/2008 16:08

Amazonianwoman - I don't think they do much for slapped cheek syndrome, there is some good information here slapped cheek syndrome

I hope your Ds gets better soon.

Tiggiwinkle - My DD always seems to get ill at the weekend! They didn't tell me to go back but I am going to take her back to the docs at the end of the week so I will ask them about it then. She was very poorly last night but seems to have picked up a bit today.

Tiggiwinkle · 18/03/2008 16:15

Glad she is feeling a bit better Lomond. It is a nasty illness which really pulls them down for a while. Do ask about the urine tests-both of mine had to have them afterwards.

amazonianwoman · 18/03/2008 22:40

Thanks Lomond, DS is fine, if a little (well, very) grumpy, but I think his teeth are just bothering him. Hey ho.

Anyway, I really hope your DD is on the mend, sounds nasty

spiker · 18/03/2008 22:54

DS1 does indeed have fever of the scarlet hue. Quite a few cases in West Yorks now.
