DM cold in hospital

DM is in hospital and is really feeling the cold. We've taken two thick blankets in but she's asking us to bring a duvet.

I presume firstly we won't be allowed, because of infection control, and secondly, what can we do? She's asked them for extra blankets and they simply bring a paper thin one that's not helping at all. She's not got a fever or anything like that, just feels the cold.

Socks, vests, fleecy pyjama or nightie, gloves, ask the staff to take her temperature, is the heating on. Make sure everything has her name on it.

You could bring some thick fleecy Pyjamas in for her?

I don't think they would necessarily object to a duvet, but you would have to take it home to wash it if anything soiled it, the hospital wouldn't wash it.

duvet’s fine so long as someone’s happy to launder it. If her temp is low then it’s worth asking about a forced air warming blanket/jacket. If she’s next to a window then it may be worth asking if it’s possible to move too.

If the staff are OK, a space blanket really helps which itu , a&e or theatres should have. A warm scarf or hat keeps the cold out, you lose a lot of heat through your head.

Buy her an oodie or an oodie look alike to wear over her PJ's?

Wishitsnows · 07/12/2023 16:41

Could you take her a heated throw to plug in?

LydiaTomos · 07/12/2023 16:56

Both M&S and Damart have thermal nightwear.

Not allowed heated blankets or anything in hospital I'm afraid, not mine anyway. I work on an elderly ward so I'm used to patients feeling the cold! We usually wrap them up in as many blankets as possible (they're thin but strangely heavy) and make sure they're wearing socks etc, make hot drinks, ensure heating is working. If you're able to, bring in some warm pyjamas/ winter clothes and dressing gown, fluffy blanket, slippers. Make sure the staff are aware too.

Fleece blanket next to her skin will be warmer than over a sheet.

Warm hat and thick fluffy socks layered over her normal socks should make a huge difference. Bootie slippers too if she is up and about.

Raquelleraquelle · 07/12/2023 17:47

Thank you all. She's got two fleece blankets, bootie slippers and fleecy PJ's, so I'll see what else I can get. Might have a word with the ward staff too and see if they can do anything.

you can take a duvet. I have had my own duvet in hospital

PickleSmith · 07/12/2023 19:36

When my mum was in hospital I took her in a cashmere blanket and cashmere socks.

Cashmere is very fine and thin but very cosy
