Amalgam filling

I have just had my first amalgam filling in one of my wisdom teeth. The dentist said he had to do amalgam as it was too hard to get it dry for a white filling.

I’ve just googled and it says not to eat on the filling for 24 hours is this correct?

I’ve had a few amalgam fillings and have always been able to eat an hour after them.

My dentist advised not to eat or drink anything for an hour and to avoid chewing on the side of the filling for the rest of the day.

Thanks both for the reply.

it was quite a deep filling and it is feeling achy now so hopefully will feel better tomorrow.

My amalgam fillings were fine to eat on (although a bit sensitive!). I broke my composite bonding eating too quickly though, and had to have it redone. The white composite seems to need some time to heal first

Amalgam takes 24 hours to reach full strength, hence why you don't eat on that side of the mouth after the local has worn off.
You're supposed to be given this information verbally during your appointment OP.

Thanks I may have been told this information but I was really nervous so might not have taken it in.
