Anyone had quinsy? Is this it? (Warning: Picture attached)

I had tonsillitis for a week, starting 2 weeks ago. A week of ABs and I only started feeling better about 5 days in to them. Then I finished and developed a horrible cough and sore throat came back. In the past 3 days my tonsils have become progressively more swollen. I saw a pharmacist yesterday at the request of my dr who said no ABs needed and to let it heal.

But I woke up in the night in a lot of pain, tonsils more swollen on one side, ear pain, neck pain, very muffled voice. But no pus on tonsils, I can open my mouth fine, can eat and drink with discomfort but basically ok. I’m warm but not feverish.

I know no one here can tell me for sure, but based on experiences of quinsy, does this look / sound like early quinsy or likely to be viral? I will see my dr again tomorrow if I still feel rough.

Seek help asap. I was hospitalised with Quincey. An abscess developed on my already swollen tonsils blocking my airway. It was brutal! Struggled to breathe and required drip as I was severely dehydrated (could not even swallow my own saliva).

Glad you're at A+E OP. My stepfather managed to nearly block his airway with a combination of Quinsy and another abscess further down (Retropharyngeal area) a couple of years ago and his refusal to get it bloody looked at!

I wouldn't be getting worried about the precise angle of your uvula - they don't half dangle at a funny range of angles and directions at the best of times! (I spend far too much time looking in people's mouths some weeks at work)

LeakyPipes · 08/12/2023 21:29

How are you now, OP? Feeling better, I hope.

morris92 · 08/12/2023 22:05

I've had it 3 times in the last 18months.
It kind of looked similar but the first time I could even open my mouth in the end and felt like someone was stabbing me in the head, ear and neck.

I ended up having it drained and put on IV plus 2 lots of antibiotics.

Now I know what to look for ring the gp straight away. It starts like a feeling of a golfball/void when you swallow and ear ache, it's only been triggered by tonsillitis once. So I never had puss on my tonsillitis with it but I could kind of see the absence above my tonsils.

Only from experience of being fobbed off before and not listened to the first time I would call you being warm a fever.
Hope you're feeling better soon. At its worst I'd rather go through my 2nd child's labour again 😂

Sorry only just read the comments (new to this 😂) hope you're feeling better now 🥰

I had a quinsy about 20 years ago - I hadbeen working with 5 part time jobs and was a ft undergrad too, so was very very rundown.

It came to a head when I had to prop myself up all night so Ididn't drown in my own saliva whileIept (proobably wouldn't have but you get things in your head sometimes, don't you). Ii couldn't speak by then, as my tonsil was so swollen, and breathing was getting harder; but I couldn't make myself heard over the phone so just waited, dozing and propped with a bowl for spiton my lap, until my flatmate, who worked nights, came home. I'd written as clear note as I could about it - I'd alreadyhad 3 courses of anti-biotics - and she called the doc for me. He gotan ambulance andoff I went.

Easily treated, quickly done. I was in for a day and a half, went home on public transport and fine thereafter.

Don't leave it as long as I did!

Update?

DelilahBucket · 14/02/2025 22:18

I've had Quincy. Couldn't tell you what it looked like, I couldn't open my mouth. It was misdiagnosed as glandular fever initially. It was on the back of tonsillitis. I couldn't swallow my own saliva and I was very ill.
I don't think that's what you've got but you definitely need to see a doctor. It's less concerning if you can eat and drink.
