Liver Fibrosis - panicking

Glitterinthegrey76 · 04/12/2023 17:20

I've name changed for this, as it's a bit outing (have discussed with close friends) and don't want it linked to my previous comments and posts.

I had laprascopic gallbladder surgery recently (totally successful). However, during the surgery, the surgeon has seen that I have "significant" fibrosis of my liver. He has referred me back to my GP for more blood tests. He was very clear with me that I must insist apon a referral to Hepatology for investigation.

My lovely Mum died of autoimmune liver disease a decade ago at the age if 57. When I told the consultant that he went quiet and then repeated that the fibrosis is significant, and must be investigated.

I'm terrified.

I'm not sure what I'm asking, for reassurance, others experience, maybe?

So, I've got a Hepatology appointment... in nearly 6 months. Feels so far away when I'm so anxious.
Blood tests being done next week, which is something I guess.

I'm now reconsidering whether to try to get a private fibroscan appointment. I've no idea how to go about it, and whether I'll need a letter from my GP first? We haven't really got the money. But I just feel like I need to know how bad the fibrosis is.

You can pay a company like vista health 4 referal 4 fibro scan..

Im waiting to hear when my nhs fibro scan is

One dr said this week it will be smart ish ( fast)

Relocating soon

& considering looking into a private fibro scan

I had my hepatology appointment this week. Consultant asked me to go for fibroscan whilst I was there and it only takes a few minutes. I was also told my results whilst I was in there.

I would imagine that for any private treatment you need a referral letter especially if they can provide them with more info.

If they are doing tests sooner, if you have dodgy results, they may well bring your appt forward

I'd wait until you get your blood tests results back, as that may point in one direction or another for further investigations or treatment.

If your GP agrees that it would then be good idea to speed up the fibroscan, she can always try to get your appointment brought forward.

But what will that achieve until you know what's causing it? The blood work will provide more useful information and it sounds like they're getting that sorted ahead of your appointment, which is good.

I'm sorry you've still got a wait ahead. They will have triaged your referral, so if they're not treating it as urgent that is a positive.

I'm reading with interest, and I hope you get the fibroscan OP, if that's what will reassure you.

I wonder if I could ask you all something. My relative has stage 1 cirrhosis from NAFLD that was left untreated for some time He is doing fine, no treatments yet, all bloods and cancer markers good. However, he has a glass of wine once a week yikes! Despite being told he shouldn't. So far he's still stage 1 after 4 years. He doesn't tell his hepatologust either. I'm wondering how much damage he's doing and when will the doc find out? He doesn't see he's doing anything wrong, but I'm a bit concerned.

What would you think?

EmmaEmerald · 23/12/2023 15:30

OP have you asked to go on the cancellation list? If that's an option for you, it's worth a try.

worldwidetravel2017 · 23/12/2023 17:14

Dya know which bloods they are doing ?

sixtiesbaby88 · 23/12/2023 18:24

It might be worth looking at Benenden. They accept pre existing conditions and you might qualify for a private appointment with such a long wait time

Glitterinthegrey76 · 02/01/2024 21:40

As I predicted, my most recent LFT'S have come back as satisfactory (ALP 126, ALT 26, bilirubin 26, albumin 41). Still waiting for the hepatitis screening results and autoimmune results.
I know I should be reassured, but knowing that the surgeon actually saw fibrosis, I'm still so anxious. My mother died little more than 3 years from diagnosis, 6 months feels like so long to wait to see a specialist.

Can you afford to go privately or go fund me for private ?
