Gum Disease & Fertility

Hi,

I’ve been reading a little about the links between gum disease and fertility and how gum disease can affect pregnancy chances.

Has anyone found this to be the case for them or has anyone fallen pregnant easily with gum disease pre pregnancy?

Thank you!

Do you have gum disease?

Gum disease is also strongly correlated with dementia, and over a long period. That means that younger people with gum disease in 20s and 30s are more likely to suffer from dementia later in life. This is not to say causation, same as the link you mentined with fertility. But something in the body is going wrong and this results in gum disease and this thing also impacts on fertility and brain health.

I work as a dental nurse op and this is news to me. Where are you getting that information out of curiosity?

If you practice good oral hygiene though and see your hygienist regularly it should keep it under control anyway.

@Justanything86 I’m currently pregnant and was reading about how gum disease can be linked to premature births etc and then stumbled across that. I’m the worst for reading way too much I just can’t help it.

I have 2 appointments in early Jan for deep cleaning and I’m determined to keep on top of this and minimise further damage as best I can. I think because I need to wait for Jan to see anyone again I’m stressing myself out the with the information I don’t have.

I had horrific gum disease in both pregnancies and it is still and ongoing issue with me now despite regular visits to the hygienist. Both my babies were fine and both arrived 10 days overdue. Keep up regular visits to the hygienist & lots of flossing, inter-dental sticks etc & you should be fine

I would really try not to worry op. Lots of women have gum disease during pregnancy due to the change in hormones so it doesn't sound like it's chronic?

Just try and use the interdentals they recommend every day and make sure you are brushing along the gumline and that will disrupt the bacteria enough to keep it under control.

I have gum disease due to bulimia and had no difficulties getting pregnant.
