Anybody had this side effect? Something or nothing?

it feels like someone has their hands round my throat, feels really tense and tight like I can’t relax it.

recently started new meds and this coincides with it. It’s started to make me feel anxious. Anyone had this, should I be worried or is it just one of those things that will pass once I get used to meds?

AlltheJays23 · 02/12/2023 23:06

What are the meds,?

Pibolar · 02/12/2023 23:11

Aripiprazole

Some medications can cause allergic reactions etc. Have you read the leaflet that came with it?

Can you tell us what it is?

Strawberrypicnic · 02/12/2023 23:13

I don't have any experience with that medication but look up globus sensation and see if that fits. It's harmless but very unpleasant!!

Pibolar · 02/12/2023 23:13

Aripiprazole
anti psychotic

Only when I had a bad reaction to penicillin.

Is your tongue or lips at all swollen?

I'd take some antihistamines as soon as possible and keep a close eye on it.

AutumnFroglets · 02/12/2023 23:14
  • your lips, mouth, throat or tongue suddenly become swollen
  • you're breathing very fast or struggling to breathe (you may become very wheezy or feel like you're choking or gasping for air)
  • your throat feels tight or you're struggling to swallow
https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/aripiprazole/side-effects-

Go back to your GP.

EDIT - Actually that was under the Call 999 list. At the very least call the NHS line.

Thanks, this is what i read. I don’t feel it’s a 999 job so thought I’d check to see if anyone else knew anything.
might give 111 a ring just in case, you never know. It’s worse tonight than it has been and worse when i lay down. Sat up in bed at minute. Still breathing and swallowing, nothing swollen enough to notice

OP posts:
AutumnFroglets · 02/12/2023 23:27

I agree with 111, I wouldn't have called 999 either. But I think you need to come off it however I don't know if its safe for you to suddenly stop. Get their advice, and I hope the feeling stops soon.

Pibolar · 02/12/2023 23:28

@AutumnFroglets thank you

Dysphasia - difficulty swallowing is listed as a side effect on the BNF drug site.
Worth calling 111 since it’s also a possible allergic reaction symptom although if you have been taking the drug for a few days then it’s less likely.
In view of the nature of the drug don’t stop taking it without medical advice.

Pibolar · 03/12/2023 08:22

I can swallow fine.
So last night I googled what @Strawberrypicnic said as I’d hate to water doctors/hospital time, they are stretched enough. Plus after thinking about it… 111 follow a script and would have sent me to hospital if I said my throat was tight, I’m on my own with ds and dog and his phone not working. I’m not sure it is globus, had it before but didn’t know it had a name. I ended up laying down and meditating to the dogs snoring and fell asleep as next thing I knew I woke around 7.

It’s been going on for over a week now but last night was worse and I guess i just panicked. The tension in my neck is unbelievable! Will call doctors on Monday and 111 in meantime if need be.

thank you all for your advice

Is it still bad today @Pibolar ? Please do call 111 if it remains the same or gets worse .

Pibolar · 03/12/2023 19:34

It’s tends to get worse in the evening so we’ll soon see. Thanks for checking up

I think it’s most likely anxiety - especially as you find it worse at night and now you’re expecting it. Of course seek medical advice if you feel you need to but I get a sense of “something” every night when trying to fall asleep and I’m sure it’s my mind playing tricks. I’m on the same medication with others for anxiety but currently making my anxiety worse, especially at bed time

ZiggyZowie · 03/12/2023 19:42

Yes I had this reaction to aripiprazole and had to be taken off it.

In addition my speech was affected as my mouth and tongue kept trembling and another symptom I had was restless legs - I couldn't sit still, paced 100 times round dining table over and over, couldn't sleep at night, pacing again.

It was awful.

I'm now on quetiapine and mirtazapine

I was going to say the same. This is how my anxiety feels - like someone is holding my throat

Larabelle6 · 03/12/2023 22:30

@ZiggyZowie i was warned of all of those side effects and advised to take propanalol much more frequently than I was to counteract them as much as possible whilst getting used to it. Thankfully I haven’t experienced any of them other than the heart sinking feeling I get when trying to sleep

Pibolar · 04/12/2023 00:12

@ZiggyZowie that sounds awful. I don’t get restless like the doc said I would. I’ve tried Quietiapine and it makes me sleep for 12-14 hours a night and feel groggy so had to come off.

OP posts:
Pibolar · 04/12/2023 00:16

@Larabelle6 @tootrueblue
maybe you’re right, it’s possible.

@Larabelle6 I take propanolol anyway so might talk to doc to see if I can up it and if they think it would help.

it will be 3 weeks on Wednesday I’ve been taking them, I hope the effects wear off as they are working well otherwise….. my ds13 even said he noticed a difference

OP posts:
Larabelle6 · 04/12/2023 07:52

@Pibolar that sounds like a good idea.

ive just realised it was you who commented on my thread - school run to sort then I’ll reply properly x

Pibolar · 04/12/2023 08:10

Ok no rush, so glad I don’t have to do the school run anymore. Ds gets bus now…. When he doesn’t miss it.

not sure what i put is much help though

Yes , that's the only thing I've found with Quetiapine, is I fall asleep after breakfast at 9 ISH if I sit on sofa - often from 10am until after 2 pm.
Waste of a day. I've told my husband to wake me if it happens .

If I go out I fall asleep on the bus as well.

Pibolar · 04/12/2023 09:43

@ZiggyZowie i know what you mean. I couldn’t wake up until 11am, my poor ds had to get himself up, ready and off to school. I daren’t lay on the sofa.
Much as it’s nice to sleep that much because I have never slept properly even as a child, I just don’t have time for that.

there’s just no pleasing some people 😂

After that I started getting dizzy which got worse by the day. Turns out it’s vertigo
