HELP........my 9mo old DD may have eaten some grains of silica

I've just found her chewing on one of those little packets (it had fallen out of a new bag I've just bought), and the packet has opened a little bit and she may have swallowed a few grains, although I think I got it off her quickly enough and there was nothing actually in her mouth when I went fishing.

I've googled it, and as far as I can see it isn't actually a poison, even though it says DO NOT EAT on the packet, and the main problem would be choking on the packet.

do i phone the doc or not?

I hate those bloody things. It'll probably be fine, they came in my ds's last pair of trainers.

I'm sure she will be ok, but mayber ring the doctor just to put your mind at rest.

info on eating silica packets

My best friend's daughter ate about 2 packets of it the other week...I think...anyway it was quite a lot.

She rang poisons unit etc etc and they said it is fine, no harm done, she is Ok.

Don't worry.

Ds licked some sugar soap once, and I had that awful 'he's going to die isnt he?' phone call, I kwym

lackaDAISYcal · 13/03/2008 17:31

waiting on nurse call back from NHS direct....will be just over an hour

they did say it's low toxicity thoough!

thanks for the link delllie; that's about all the info I could find

she is bright as a button and lying squealing at the picture of the baby on the changing bag label!

See what they say, but try not to worry, the problem with them eating a bag is that it might expand and choke them.

This hasn't happened.

I'm fairly sure that the grainy things are not at all poisonous.

PortAndLemon · 13/03/2008 17:33

It's not a problem. I ate it as a child and I'm fine (OK, well, that's a matter of opinion...). Even eating a whole packet wouldn't be an issue, and a few grains is definitely not a problem. It's like eating sand.

lackaDAISYcal · 13/03/2008 17:37

ooh that was quick. They say she'll be fine and that it is definately non-toxic.

LOL though, I've to look out for excessive drooling, vomitting, a rash.....

.....she is teething, has the D&V bug that is doing the rounds and has a post viral rash at the mo!
