Does the burn on my hand look infected to you? (Photo attached)

I was still half asleep on Saturday when I poured the kettle over my hand missing the hot water bottle I was trying to fill. It took a few hours to cool down

The skin didn't break at the time and looked like a black bruise. Went shopping on Monday and a small brush on my trousers knocked a some of the skin off

Saw 2 different pharmacists on Monday who said it was very clean and to leave it uncovered to heal and for bed pop Vaseline, dressing and a bandage on.
I did that for last night but today it doesn't look very good to me today

Feeling a bit queezy with the pain too - would Naproxen be better than paracetamol?

It doesn't look infected but that is a large burn and I think would benefit from a dressing to protect it, aid healing and to prevent infection. You have lost the skin barrier which means it is more susceptible to infection. I think that definitely needs looking at today - I would try to get an urgent appointment with your practise nurse.

FloofCloud · 29/11/2023 12:38

Yes phone GP and see if you can have a nurse dress it properly
I scalded 3 of my fingers and 1 bubbles up like yours, it was painful and should really have been dressed and was tiny compared to yours
Good luck

gamerchick · 29/11/2023 12:40

That looks too big just to leave to its own devices OP. I'd get a second opinion.

olderbutwiser · 29/11/2023 12:43

I would take that to a Minor Injuries clinic for proper dressing, if you have one. If not then it depends on whether your GP practice can help or if you need to go to A&E. Hand mobility is important and it would be easy for that to get infected, I would say.

Seeline · 29/11/2023 12:44

I'd go to minor injuries. A burn bigger than a 50p needs looking at. It needs a proper dressing. And vaseline shouldn't be used on a burn - no pharmacist should be recommending that!

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 29/11/2023 12:46

Not infected yet, but 100% agree with previous replies needs a proper dressing on it, possibly some burn lotion and to be kept a eye on. On a different note, i didn't think you were meant to fill hot water bottles with boiling hot water

Wolfiefan · 29/11/2023 12:47

Any burn on a hand you need to get seen.

RatherBeRiding · 29/11/2023 12:49

I did exactly the same a couple of months back, but got my foot instead! I too was umm-ing and ahh-ing about infection - went to Boots for some of their burn cream - it improved dramatically overnight! There are lots of non stick dressings to keep it clean - the Savlon burn cream is amazing and really took the sting out of it straight away.

Newuser75 · 29/11/2023 12:49

That looks really sore!! I am usually one to stay away from doctors but I'd definitely say that needed looking at. I'd imagine it would be properly dressed and you given some strong painkillers. Ouch!

scaredofff · 29/11/2023 12:51

Thank you everybody for your unanimous advice. I will follow it and head along to minor injuries in an hour
I'm also worried about it getting infection being left open so glad you all think the same

Thank you!

@RatherBeRiding the burn cream in boots I know what you're talking about! Did you feel lots of pain using it the first few times?

After seeing their pharmacist on Monday I bought some and tried it at home - I almost screamed the house down and had to wash it off. That was around 4 hours after I'd first knocked the skin off though so it was maybe too raw to put on at the time. I could try again I'm just afraid it hurts again

@Seeline
Same! I always believed that Vaseline feeds bacteria (I don't know where I got that from) so was also a bit hmmm when he said it. And I would think he didn't know too but I saw 2 pharmacists in 2 different pharmacies and was told the same thing

How’s your hand now @scaredofff ?

HesAWankerOp · 30/11/2023 07:15

Oh my god, I can’t believe the pharmacists didn’t tell you to take that to A&E. I hope you have had it looked at and treated op.

coxesorangepippin · 01/12/2023 02:33

That looks really sore op, hope you're doing better

OneFrenchEgg · 01/12/2023 02:41

I went to a pharmacist with a burn and they tried to sell me burn cream. Ended up in minor injuries with appointments to come back for redressing and monitoring. I would 💯 stop putting any lotion on it and go to the minor injuries asap
On another note I just had a minor skin removal thingy and they told me to buy a new Vaseline and apply three times a day to what looks like a horrible graze.
