He's had this cough on and off since september. It seems to go for a week or so and then it comes back. I'm fed up of the doc keep telling me there is nothing wrong with him when he keeps having terrible coughing fits to the extent that he is heaving.

Its worse in the evening. Put him to bed last night and he spent the first 30 minutes just coughing, then he was awake at 6am this morning and again spent approx 30 minutes just coughing.

Have docs at 10.45 are they gonna dismiss me as being an over protective mum or is there actually something more serious???

no animals. He did have a really bad coughing fit last november and was taken to hospital in ambulance and it took 3 goes on the nebuliser to calm his breathing down so that he could come home. Hospital send us home with an asthma pump (tho the peadiatrician doesnt think he's asthmatic) just to help regulate his breathing.

Slight runny nose and does get very wheezy when coughing. Tho the doctors keep telling me there is nothing on his chest and its clear.

Argh feel like i'm banging my head against brick wall,

No breathing test just asked questions as whether he gets out of breath easily and what time he wakes up coughing.

We do use asthma pump when he gets bad and it does ease it, but dont know if I should keep using it if hes not actually asthmatic.

Can the gp test for asthma???

one of mine had a recurrent cough last year that lasted on and off for months - it sounds very like you describe. I think it was a virus and did eventually go away.

As far as coughing lying down - try propping him up on pillows and leaving a bowl of water in the room to keep the air a bit moist - your throat tends to dry out when you lie down, especially if you have a blocked noise and are breathing through your mouth - which may trigger coughing and start the cycle.

DD1 had this last year, they gave us ventolin, it is not an asthma inhaler, justan inhaler. It widens the airways making breathing easier. I also prop her up on pillows. She had it from before xmas til about May, then it went about sept, the doc thougth it might be connected to the seaosns, but since it started in winter was not sure. It is back now and has been for a couple mths or so. I do the bowl of water, and the inhaler if she is coughing non stop. 2 squirts. It can't hurt them, don't worry.
She is 4 now btw, but would have been 3 the first time.

I don't worry much about it now, she is just snotty a lot and I think that causes a lot of the cough at night. Why she is snotty al the time may be the next question I ask the doc

diplodocus · 13/03/2008 10:08

If his chest is clear it could be recurrent croup. Have you tried a humidifier? Works a treat for my DD, who also has dreadful coughing fits.

BandofMothers · 13/03/2008 10:10

I think the air is just crapper now, and therefore there is a lot more of this type of thing about.
People are very quick to point the finger at allergies these days. Too quick acc to a recent newspaper article, esp with food.
Copugh always worse in the morning btw as they have been lying down and then have to clear all the crap out - lovely. Sounds exactly like dd1

GreatAuntieWurly · 13/03/2008 11:41

back now. Doc said its because he's snotty. WTF. anyway has give his some medicine for " respiratory congestion" so hopefully it might help.

Its not croup, ds1 suffers from croup . Tho I am gonna get up in the morning clear their beds off, change the pillows over, take away the feather pillows (see if that makes a diffence), take down the curtains and wash them (he sleeps next to the window) hoover their beds etc etc and see if that helps.

Just had a really bad coughing fit that lasted nearly an hour (he was fighting to stop coughing with every breath in), in the end I gave him 4 quirts of the salbutamol pump (that the doctor says he doesnt need) and its calmed it right down. Can i ask for him to be given another salbutamol pump as I dont think this one has much left in it.???

right I'm new to mumsnet and joined just to post on this very topic! My DD1 13 months has had similar symptoms since October. put docs have given her Salbutamol ventolin inhaler to use up to four times daily. They seem to see it as a perfectly reasonable way to help them manage. Also if shes not better in two weeks they are going to refer her on to ? some higher power!

I say go and describe symptoms in detail really tell them every detail and you should get somewhere

BandofMothers · 14/03/2008 07:40

I would imagine you can ask for another one, esp if it helped.

How wierd that I said about being snoty and then the doc said it. It seems to have infuriated you, but it actually made me feel better, sorry

I am sorry tho that your ds seems to have it so badly and I really hope you can get to the bottom of it.
