A Question about mumps

My younger sister has mumps and we were supposed to go to my mums after Xmas. DD is fine as she has had MMR, DP has had mumps - I haven't had either.

Does anybody know if there is ablood test to see if you already have mumps antibodies?

Also I may decide to have the MMR myself as I would really like to see my mum as she is having a bit of a shitty time at the moment. How long does it take for the vaccine to take effect - I REALLY don't want to get mumps - apart from discomfort factor at my age (37) DD starts school in January and I have to take her to school every day - don't know anyone at the school yet that I could ask to drop off and pick up.

Anyone know?

Given your age (don't worry I'm the same sort of age) you're probably immune. There was obviously quite a bit of mumps around when we were kids and it is very very common for mumps in young children to be practically symptomless or very mild and therefore missed.

The only way you can be sure really is to get an antibody titre, but I doubt the NHS would do it in these circumstances- and not sure how long the results would take anyway. The vaccine takes around 3 weeks to work I think, but will vary a little from person to person.

Thanks JJB. I was at home when my other sisters had it so I am quite possibly already immune.

Have called GP's surgery this morning and am waiting for them to get back to me.
