Can you use hydrocortisone on an under 1?

ds3 is 11 months - he got a dribble rash which he started itching, then I changed washing powder and he started itching more - so got some epederm and antihistamine from the doctor - but it seems worse now and he is scratching for england and am thinking a coat of hydrocortisone would sort it out once and for all. any thoughts? Can I use an over the counter one which is quite mild - I know the E45 people do a mild one?

I am thinking would be quicker to just go and buy some than wait for doctors appointment, go to doctors then chemist .... blah blah etc etc

Thanks

yes, my ds was prescribed 0.5% by doctor.

trace2 · 12/03/2008 16:33

my dd 9 months as it for flare ups from gp its 1%

mybabysinthegarden · 12/03/2008 16:34

My dd was prescribed a combination HC/canesten for nappy thrush under 1. Chemist might be able to advise if you don't want to wait for the Dr.

can be prescribed for children, but not sold over the counter for under 10s

SammyC · 12/03/2008 17:48

I dont think you can use h/c on the face. I am not 100 % but pretty sure you cant

jennster · 12/03/2008 17:50

No shouldn't be used on face unless prescribed by dr

PrincessPeaHead · 12/03/2008 17:59

you should not use 1% hydrocort on the face of a 1 year old. Please don't, it is too strong on such delicate skin

you could use .5% if prescribed by a doctor. Strangely you can buy 1% over the counter but not .5%.

Trip to the GP needed I'm afraid.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/03/2008 18:03

You need to go to the gp to get the proper stuff.

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 12/03/2008 18:04

Yes, my dd was prescribed it when she was 1 month old, she had a horrible rash/spots on her face.

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 12/03/2008 18:05

hmm, just going to run and have a look at it ....

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 12/03/2008 18:05

pheeeeeeeeew, it's 0.5 %

Thanks again - went to see HV - she said it is meant to be prescribed but could use 1% on his neck but not his face. Put some on today and already less scratching and has calmed down alot.

Oh it is magic isn't it? Works so quickly, but is so strong. I was prescribed Canesten HC for dd's dreadful nappy rash and it worked a miracle.

PrincessPeaHead · 14/03/2008 07:47

the HV isn't a doctor. Why are you taking medical advice from a non-medical basically unqualified person? Really, go to your GP. You shouldn't be using 1% on such a young child without medical approval.

Octothechildherder · 14/03/2008 13:47

She was a nurse for 15 years before becoming a Health Visitor (8 years ago). She has known me and my kids for 6 years - much longer than the doctor and knows I am not stupid enough to do stuff that would harm my kids. I wasn't asking her permission - I went to check the % that was allowed after 2 different ones were mentioned on the thread. It was obvious he needed hydrocortisone - it was just whether he was old enough - which he is.

The rash has now gone after 3 applications - thank you again.
