She's been asleep all day today. Not asked for any tv or anything and I can't get any drinks down, although she had a big beaker of water about 5am. has slept all day on the sofa.

At what stage is this a dr appt! Very rarely go, I'm usually not concerned as long as kids are getting fluids and not disturbed, but I think we're now in the vicious circle of not getting fluids so drowsy and so not drinking anything.
Also has a fruit drop breath. but i guess that's due to lack of fluids. Drank better yesterday.

Won't dr just tell me to get water down?

would she like an ice lolly?

Tiggiwinkle · 12/03/2008 15:07

Take her to the GP. She may need antibiotics for a throat infection; whatever it is, if she is not taking fluids she needs to be seen.

I agree about trying ice lollies. Also try to explain why she must drink because at 4yo she should be able to understand a simple explanation. If none of this works then I would go straight to surgery. If she gets dehydrated she will need a drip. TBH a Drs appt may help anyway because she may respond better to him/her saying she must drink to get better IYSWIM.

I dip my clean finger in some cold water and literally put a drop on the child's lips. Just do it drop by drop with kind, soothing words. Needless to say it is every so often day and night if necessary.

Or I use a tiny spoon and give just a tiny sip each time.

Phone the dr's surgery and chat it through by phone when s/he calls back. Then take it from there. Our surgery is great for that.

thanks for your advice.

She's now woken up and I've offered ice cream, which was accepted, but she's not now interested. Haven't got any lollies, but that's a good idea. Will get DP to pick some up.

Am reluctant to ring GP as will now mean at least a hour wait at emergency clinic (no q jumping with kids!), and so if no improvement overnight I'll ring for a morning appt,

re calling doctor, we can call and ask for a phone call back. Then all you do is talk it through by phone. If you call the surgery there would be a number for the out of hours service. Then someone calls an on call dr who then just phones you can you discuss anything you feel you want to run past them.

You don't have to move your child or go out of the house.

I'm just explaining it more clearly as I used to think that I didn't want to bother the dr but it is a service for all of us right through the 24 hours

My children are that bit older and I'm more used to using them as a resource now.

"Fruit drop breath" is a severe sign of dehydration and would definitely warrant a doctor visit IMO!

HereComeTheGirls · 12/03/2008 20:51

Actually more a sign of not eating but should definitely be investigated!

katylessbumpy · 12/03/2008 21:01

is it fruit drop breath or pear drop breath?
sorry to be so picky but it struck a chord.
pear drop smelling breath can be an indication of diabetes.i'm not trying to panic you but i would certainly get her checked out asap
