Daughters eyes

Hello my daughter wears scleral contact lenses, her prescription is very high as she has no lens, they were removed along with cataracts when she was a baby.

The lenses were great for the past year but they irritate her now and again, meaning my daughter has to rest her eyes.

She's just come home from a day at college and her eyes look so bloodshot, is there any opticians on here.?? I've attached a photo, her consultant is stumped and thought it was her contact lens solution but we have one that has no preservatives in it.

Anyway take a look at the photo

What subject does she do at college? Does it involve chemicals? Chemistry, hairdressing...
Or does she often sit next to someone who wears a strong perfume?

It could be that an external chemical along with the strain from the lenses is causing an irritation.

It’s either a tight periphery (so a fitting issue) or a reaction to a solution.
what the name of the solution you’re using?
you can also be allergic to the buffer in the saline which she uses before insertion.

She studies art , they sit on big tables so not next to anyone..but I'll ask her ..good point

We changed the saline to the one from Screwfix that has nothing in it. And she cleans the lenses with Ote??

I've worn old fashioned rigid contact lenses for over 50 years. I've been using Avizor cleaner (for rigid and gas permeable lenses) for the last couple of years with no problems.

if it’s just one eye, it probably just needs the fitting checking.

The other possibility is I suspect that that saline has borate in it. They usually say when they don’t. you could try this one for a couple of weeks and see if it makes a difference.

Screwfix?! As in the trade counter? For building materials?

underneaththeash · 22/11/2023 21:30

They sell saline eye wash (it’s for first aid kits - builders tend to get stuff in their eyes) it’s sterile. (But probably contains borate)

I wear gas permeable lenses albeit ones that do not extend past the iris to the white of my eye. I have always used either Boston Advance or Total wetting & soaking solution, and the cleaner for almost 40 years without issue. I rarely use just saline.

I also went to art school and found my eye would often get horribly itchy in the print room, particularly if I was using acid for printmaking. Also, sometimes, even turps and oil paint would be irritants, more so if the room wasn't properly ventilated. During my working life, I find extended periods in front of a computer screen/under bad lighting, particularly strip lights can result in my eyes looking like your daughters. In all instances, I take my lenses out and rest my eyes. Due to the nature of gas permeable lenses, most (eye drops aren't suitable for me, so can't recommend any).

stirrupleathers · 22/11/2023 21:57

Yes they're the ones, and the saline pods were recommended..seemed to work for a while ..no irritation

Wow that saline is so expensive..but I worth it I guess , if she does not get any irritation.
We are back at the hospital tomorrow for another fitting

If it is the solution I believe the redness is often on the lower half of the eye, due to gravity, so it may be another source of irritation: fitting, allergy, dryness. It doesn't look infected. Hope the hospital can sort you out

LightSpeeds · 22/11/2023 23:03

Is her eye sore? This could be uveitis / iritis. They can check for this at the hospital.
