Hello

Just wondering if anyone can explain glasses prescriptions in simple terms for me

I've just been and had an eye test at specsavers My last test was a year ago also with them. I'm struggling to understand the change in my prescription.

My test a year ago said

R sph -1.00 cyl -1.25 axis 150.0
L sph -1.50 cyl -0.25 axis 30.0

My new test says

R sph -0.75 cyl -0.75 axis 165.0
L sph -1.25 cyl -0.50 axis 20.0

Have my eyes got better? Changed shape as she says I have astigmatism which I was also told at the previous test?

My last glasses felt quite strong. I'm so confused and although I asked while I was there and she explained I'm still confused 😕

I had this issue a few years back, I was adamant they'd gotten it wrong and went to another opticians for a 2nd opinion. She explained that whilst your eyes can get better as you age it is often a result of having the wrong prescription at an early age and wanting everything to be big and bold, crisp and clear that your brain basically tricks you into thinking the stronger prescription is best when often it's not.
I've gone down from -3.00 sph to -2.25 R eye and -2.75 to -2.00 (don't have prescription to hand for axis etc) in the last 4 years and have to say I don't get as many headaches.

I had this recently but the optician explained that as people get older and they start to develop long sightedness as well, then your prescription tends to improve as your eyes go the other way!

I agree with PP; it’s likely to be a combination of becoming more long sighted as you age and also the previous trend for over correcting vision.

Thank you all, that makes a lot more sense than what she explained Smile

Hopefully when my glasses are ready they feel much more comfortable as I always felt like my previous pair where a bit too much.

The part about getting older resonated as it's my birthday today too!
