I think i probably already know the answer to this but ds has impetigo, he woke up with a small red lumpy mark on his face yeaterday, this morning it had spread to his lip so we took him to the gp and he diagnosed impetigo. It seems a lot better toniht so how long does it usually take to clear up?He has school assembly on friday and it is the first time he has actually had to speak and was so looking forward to it, do you think he will be back in school on friday?
By the way dont google impetigo and look at the pictures it scared the cr*p out of me.

oh my ds has had this three times now. What did they give you? Cream or anti-bio? Has he had it before. I would say it would be clear or not noticeable by fri. I always but the cream on and then some aveeno oil. Does he suffer from dry skin? God sorry about all the questions!

leander · 11/03/2008 22:36

HI, the doc gave me fuciden cream, he's not had it before and he doesnt have dry skin.he is being pretty good about not touching it, well he has since i showed him the pics of what would happen if he did mess with it.

Mine's booked in with the doc tomorrow, but I'm not sure it's impetigo. He's had a patch on his mouth/side of lip for nearly a fortnight and it hasn't spread.

Impetigo spreads, doesn't it?

mehdismummy · 11/03/2008 22:43

yes it does. What does it look like desi? Ds had that cream it works well and fast. I would say he will be ok by fri.

leander · 11/03/2008 22:44

brilliant, i hope you're right he is so excited to have a "speaking part at last"

Nasty thing impetigo. We had a couple of bouts of it some time ago. Dd had it all over the backs of her legs and I was treating it as an eczema flare up (never seen impetigo before then )

I know it responds super fast (couple of days or so much improved) to oral AB's.

pointydog · 11/03/2008 22:48

dd1 just got this for the first time on camp last week. No one did a single thing to treat it - I really did expect a bit of savlon or dettol wash at least, her face was a mess of burst blisters. Rash on SUnday morning. Insisted on oral antibiotics yesterday. Still noticeable.

TsarChasm · 11/03/2008 22:54

Pointydog. Your poor dd. Hope it goes soon.

pointydog · 11/03/2008 22:55

I'm a little concerned about scarring actually. But she feels fine and healthy so it's not that bad I suppose.

VictorianSqualor · 11/03/2008 22:57

As long as it is definitely impetigo, a few days, you say it's lookng better already so is probably impetigo.
DD and DS both had similar things to impetigo and it tunred out it was some flipping rats disease our cat had got from the farm across the road, they lost hair and everything, so I just want to say, as long as it is getting better dont worry.
It it gets worse, get a skin scraping, it may be fungal instead.
Impetigo is very common though so is probably that.

pointydog · 11/03/2008 22:58

rat's disease!! Losing hair!!

Fucking hell.

BigBadMouse · 11/03/2008 22:59

desi it does spread but not always as fast as you might expect IME. DD2 had a patch on the end of her nose (from carpet surfing) for two weeks, I just thought it was a big graze as it hadn't spread to anywhere else.

Fucidin cream worked quickly for us but after getting it once, both DDs seem to be more prone to it - not sure why

VictorianSqualor · 11/03/2008 22:59

I know, if you google 'kerion' and look at the pics it's what DS had, when Dd got it I kicked up a stink, got a dermatologist to see her etc, so she got treated and checked quicker
DS' hair is only just growing back, since XMAS!

pointydog · 11/03/2008 23:01

wow. It's all abit alienesque.

I'll probably have convinced myself dd has that by tomorrow.

kid · 11/03/2008 23:02

DD might have had impetigo several times, the dr can never decide if its impetigo or a coldsore. They usually prescribe fucidin or zovirax. Whatever it is, it never leaves a scar and is usually all cleared up within a week or so.

emma1977 · 11/03/2008 23:06

As long as its only a small patch of impetigo, it should be cleared by Friday. It doesn't scar.

Remember to make sure he has his own flannel, towel, etc so that the whole family don't end up with it!

leander · 11/03/2008 23:17

Blimey Vs you know how to make someone feel better dont you
It is clearing up, well it olooks better than it did today so maybe he will be able to go to school on friday.

leander, I hope your little boy is getting better.

To those who asked about my ds (many thanks), I took him to the doc today and she said it was impetigo. So, he has the cream, and fingers crossed.
