REALLY GETTING WORRIED ABOUT MY DD - ANYONE EXPERIENCED THIS??

My DD2 is 22 months and she has always had a history of choking on her food quite easily. It took ages before she could take any lumps in her food and even now has to have her food cut up very well or she chokes and makes herself sick.

Over the past 10 days or so she will be eating well then suddenly stop, look all serious and wretch a little bit and make a sound as though she is being choked. She will then not eat any more of what she was eating but will sometimes take something else. It seems to upset her. She sometimes does this shortly after eating too.

I'm getting incresingly worried that she has a problem with her throat. She doesn't appear to have a sore throat right now but is very clingy and seems quite tired at times at the moment - possibly coming down with chicken pox as there are quite a few cases at her nursery.

I'm going to get her checked out at the doctors but, other than looking down her throat, I don't know what else they might do.

Any advice / suggestions / experience of this? I'm getting really concerned

I would probably call into the doctors - it sounds like it may be reflux which can hurt and obviously that might be where she gets the choking sound as she is trying to swallow down the acid - hope she feels better soon.

She had reflux as a baby - can it come back just like that ?. She has also been doing three dirty nappies in a row every other day and nothing in between so maybe there is a digestive problem somewhere.

Any other ideas????

Am afraid I can't help ..... but defo go with visit to GP and if they are really non specific you could ask for a referral to a paediatrician or someone who specialises in gastro-intestical disorders?

My DN certainly had a severe problem eating lumpy/chunky food/gagging on anything not cut small enough.

With him you could visibly see by looking in his throat that his tonisls were permanently HUGE leaving little space for food to pass.

He had tonsillectomy & gromits at about 3.

dd has reflux, which is managed well with meds - but when she has a sore throat, or any inflammation around that area, she tends to do exactly this. In her case, its not helped by having a narrow 'throat' (she has a floppy larynx - the cartilage isn't fully formed yet) either.

I don't suppose your dd was/is a noisy breather, especially when lying flat or after crying?

BigBadMouse · 11/03/2008 22:37

No she's not a noisy breather either when lying flat or after crying but she is only tiny really, a very small build, so may have quite a small throat.

I assume the floppy larynx would make the breathing noisy?

Am really glad and appreciative of any ideas as I want to go to the docs fully armed with questions.

Yes, it makes breathing noisy - sort of like a squeaky door mixed with Darth Vader.

If she just has a narrow throat, I would imagine any sort of virusy infection at the level of the larynx would make her prone to chokiness....dd only chokes and cries when she has a sore throat, or (guessing, she's 15 mos so cant' tell me) just below her throat, IYSWIM.

Its horrid isn't it? Poor your dd, and hope the doctor can at least reassure you.

BigBadMouse · 12/03/2008 12:51

Thanks for that.

Not going to get a chance to se the doc for a few days so hoping things don't get worse.

TBH it's making mealtimes really stressful for all - I'm really hoping it is just some sort of throat infection that will clear up. I had a look down there (during one of her many tantrum / screaming fits) and couldn't see anything wrong so it might be quite low down.

Fingers crossed.

If anyone else has any suggesstions I'd be glad of them.
