My poor dd (5) has had stomach pains all day. They are coming in waves and is really crying in pain and curling up when they happen. She has also been back and fore to the loo with bad poos too. Anyone got any idea what I can give her to help. Am I right in thinking fizzy drinks can help? I am sure I may have been told this by the nurse when one of dds had something like this before.

Think in the absence of rehydration sachets you can use coke which has been stirred to get rid of some of the fizz - contains some sugars etc

If you have any peppermint tea that may help (or anything minty). Also ginger is very good for stomach problems - you can make a sweetened infusion with fresh ginger and hot water, although I'm not sure a 5 yo would drink it!

Peppermint essential oil in a burner is good for nausea too.

nux vom homeoapthic remedy is amazing - you can get it from any good chemist - it has worked a treat for ds.

Flat coke or I was brought up on kaolin and Morphine (think that how you spell it...but a lot of chemists don't sell it now.

Its quite foul taste but works well.

Is there any point in going to the doctor? DH is adamant DS2 should go, but he has a touching faith in the universal power of antibiotics. I still treasure the moment when I had to tell him that there was no cure for the common cold Unless DS2 gets seriously dehydrated, all the doctor's going to do is tell me to give lots of fluids, surely?

I think you tend to know as a parent when things are serious and when you need to see the doctor about things. I have had too many trips with dds to the surgery only be told to do what I have been doing already - mostly plenty of fluids, Calpol etc etc etc. I think dd will just pass her way through this stomach bug. She has been sick this evening a few times too (all over my nice new lounge carpet - smells wonderful!! ). Hopefully it will have shifted some of the nasty stuff that's making her feel ill. I just wasn't happy seeing her in so much pain earlier and didn't like the fact that there wasn't anything I could do to help her.

Poor thing. DS2's only been sick once, in Sainsbury's, which was somewhat embarrassing but at least spared my carpets He's 13 months, so utterly miserable with it, but at least if it drags on there's a chance we'll infect the in-laws

My same dd threw up in the ELC last year. That was rather embarrasing. The shop assistant turned green as it smelt dreadful. Luckily my dm was with me bless her and she did all the cleaning up while I cleaned up dd. The shop was quite empty, unsurprisingly, when we had finished

bless her - she's finally given up and gone to sleep. has worn herself out. let's hope we have a peaceful night. she was restless last night with her dodgy bottom. I could do with some sleep.

Good luck Go to bed now, quick, so you can get some sleep in before the next round!

I frequently WANT to throw up in the ELC. I think it's the music...

SPARKLER1clausiscomingtotown · 19/12/2004 23:22

I would go to bed but you know what it's like - I HAVE to do this mumsnet stuff first
