DD was really really sick yesterday - started vomiting around midnight on Sunday and didn't stop until 6pm last night. I took her to the GP who said she was suffering from this bug that's around and what to do if dehydrated.

She's been drinking water today (she wouldn't touch Diaorlyte though) and ate about 3 grapes and that's it.

The thing is she is soooo lethargic. I've never seen her like it (or any other child) I know you hear of chldren being asleep on the sofa all day but that is literally what she's been doing. She has no strength whatsoever.

All day she seems to have had a mild temperature. I've just given her a bath which she nearly fell asleep in and now her temp is really high at 39.3.

She says there's no headache / sore neck and nothing hurts. She has no rash either. Happy to be in a well lit room (during the rare moments she's awake).

I've put a Kool'n'Soothe thing n her head and some ibuprofen (have been doing Calpol until now because I think ibuprofen isn't good with stomach upsets).

Not sure what else to do.

Is this how this bug manifests itself? Anyone else's LO's been like this?

I'm not saying it is meningitis, but some of the classic symptoms such as stiff neck, headache and dislike of light are less common in young children, so I wouldn't use their absence as a guide. Likewise the rash - it isn't always present and often appears last.

Are her hands and feet warm or cold? Is she still vomiting? What is her skin like - pale, mottled?

I would take her to out of hours Doctor - s/he can look for signs of infection/dehydration and it will put your mind at rest. Wrap her in a quilt and take her along. Ring NHS Direct and they will refer you on.

Myself and my children all had a viral vomiting bug together last year.Vomiting for a day or so , followed by raised temperatures and total exhaustion. I literally could not stand up and the kids were the same. So yes, your Dr could be right in his/her diagnosis.

However I think it you have any concerns you should go to the Dr immediately. Better to be told you're wrong and your DD is alright.

If you do want to cool your DD down I would recommend stripping her down and sponging her down with a cloth wrung out in cold water, keeping a loose cotton sheet over her as you do so so she doesn't get a chill. Co medicate with calpol and ibuprofen - calpol every 4 hrs, ibuprofen every 6 hours, so shes getting something every two hours.Give her ice cream to eat and loads of cool drinks.

Skin - pale, no mottling. Cheeks mildly flushed. Hands and feet are a pleasant temperature. Temp dropped to 38.6 now after ibuprofen at 7pm.

elliephant - interesting what you said about not being able to stand. she's VERY unstable on her pins.

Will call out of hours doc. Can't take her anywhere as DH not back from work yet and DD1 is in bed.

Do call out of hours doc, sounds viral to me, but best to be safe.

Took 15 mo dd to A&E last Friday night, with high temp, weird cry, shaking and (once) vomiting - they saw a rash I hadn't spotted/could barely see. Turned out to be viral, but I was glad I went.

BTW, A&E was absolutely full of small kids with high temps and vomiting....very tired, unhappy babies, poor things. Sounds much like your dd. They were given Calpol suppositories (if they couldn't keep down oral sort), checked for dehydration and sent home once temps dropped.

Yes my 1 Year Old daughter started vomiting in the early hours of yesterday morning..... her cheeks were flushed . Definitely some horrid bug going around , some other babies I know have it. Poor little mites

DD is just getting over a bug, her temp was 40.6 for 4 days. I took her to the gp twice as i was so worried about her temp. GP could'nt realy do anything, dd was'nt sick and was drinking (sipping) so we just had to sit it out, todays the first day in a week where she has been able to walk around.

Hope your LO gets better soon.

I have had this since Sunday lunch time. I felt so tired and clammy until lunch time today and I still feel tired. So early night and back to work tomorrow.
