I think I've just been fleeced by an unscrupulous dentist - anyone who can help me?

I've had a toothache for a few days so I went to the dentist. Because we've only just moved here we're not registered with anyone yet so I phoned our PCT to ask where the nearest NHS dentist was, or failing that, emergency dentist. the PCT told me to go to a certain dentist.

so off i toddle, have to take an hour off work to do it, he does x-rays and says i have an abcess and i'll need root canal doing. i say i can't afford it, even on the NHS, so i'll come back when i've saved up the money.

when I go to the desk to pick up my anti-b's the receptionist tells me it's £53. i say, "I thought this was an NHS check up, in which case it should be about £1." and she says, "Who told you that?" so I say, "The PCT." And she says, "ah right, if it was someone here we could have done it for you on the NHS but it's their mistake." so i had no choice but to fork out £53!

anyway, i rang the PCT when i got out, and the dappy woman there tells me i have to phone the dental dept. "But they're not there," says i. "Leave a message on the answerphone," says she. There isn't even an answerphone there.

So what I think has happened is that the dentist is telling the PCT that he'll do NHS treatment, then he's getting patients in, then saying he doesn't do NHS treatment so he can collect the private fee.

Is there anything I can do about this? sorry it's so long!

Definately sounds odd.
I needed an emergency dentist (not with anyone at the moment), and I was informed which dentist to go to, and what time etc.

I paid £10.00 to have a check and a tooth removed! £53.00 sounds very excessive, especially with the PCT sending you there!

theUrbanDryad · 11/03/2008 17:58

i think it may have been an incompetent receptionist at the PCT but i'm really cross that they sent me there. one of my work colleagues went, "Oh they always get that wrong. They say it's NHS but it's not."

Did you not say you were an nhs patient on arrival? I think you have to fill in a form stating you are nhs and would be happy for you teeth to be inspected by somekind of nhs regulatory body if required

TheBlonde · 11/03/2008 18:11

when you called the dentist's to make the appt did you say you wanted an NHS appt?

DeeRiguer · 11/03/2008 18:13

yes, i think they establish nhs by forms at the start like little ducks says
this is extortion really
sorry for your toothache
you dont need this to add to that pain..

DeeRiguer · 11/03/2008 18:17

do you get tax credits?
doesnt that cover most dentistry on nhs

theUrbanDryad · 11/03/2008 18:19

at my old dentists they did all the forms afterwards, we do the same where i work (opticians) so i didn't think it was unusual for them not to give me the forms first.

i should've asked when making the appointment, but seriously i'm in so much pain it's difficult to think straight! he didn't even give me any pain killers either...

also - re: tax credits, certainly with the NHS forms i work with it's only family tax credit that you get NHS help with and we don't get that as we both work. anyway even if i did get help with the tax credits i still wouldn't get the help in this situation as he wasn't they weren't taking NHS patients.

oh, and he told me they only do kids NHS if their parents are private patients and most dentists in the area are the same, so poor little ds is fucked too...

I think unfortuantly nowdays you cant assume that you will be treated as an NHS patient if you dont specifically ask about it.
Shame you didnt get any painkillers - he could have done that for you, and its really really sore if you have an abcess.

HereComeTheGirls · 11/03/2008 19:24

Don't hate me, I work for a dentist..we don't do any forms for NHS patients BEFORE treatment, they are all done afterwards. However we make it very clear if someone is an NHS or private patient before their first appointment!

theUrbanDryad · 11/03/2008 19:42

they're online as being NHS as well

i WOULD honestly go back to the PCT and make a fuss both at them, and about the dentist. NHS dentists have to see whoever walks in the door, regardless of who their parents are or how they are treated. This sort of behaviour is in my opinion , nothing short of dishonest - If you go private, you go private, you go NHS, you go NHS and you should have it all explained to you before undergoing any treatment. You have gone through the door under false pretences - and the dentist is breaching his contract with both you and his /her PCT, and could be in serious trouble. It is behaviour like this that ruins the reputation of some of us other, hardworking and honest dentists -- and it makes me cross !!!!!!!

bubblagirl · 11/03/2008 20:01

dentist in my area if not registered and need work its 50 pound an hour as not registered to dental surgery
