Lancet finger blood test

Is it normal for a lancet finger blood kit to leave a cut and cause throbbing finger? I'm worried I may have struck a nerve, it's very blue/bruisey around the little cut the needle made, is that normal? I work from home and even typing it hurting, I did the test about 4 hours ago now

I'm just worried because it really hurts to type and looks very bruised

Just causing a lot of anxiety

Yup it can be. They're often thick and not the sharpest. I'm. Diabetic and won't let the hospital use their lancets because of this. When your picking 8 plus times a day it soon adds up!

LIZS · 13/11/2023 15:32

Could do, especially if you pressed it hard or squeezed to get the sample.

IDoNotMoisturise · 13/11/2023 15:33

yes I find them very painful for days but i do have fibro so feel pain more

I did press down a fair bit as it said to on the instructions 🙈 did two fingers as I couldn't get enough blood with one as the other is fairly blue aswell around it, but this is the worst one ☹️ really does hurt

I've used a few of these - those lancets are vicious! They've taken several days for the bruising to go. Just make sure you keep it clean and try to use other fingers instead of the bruised one for pressing anything.

Stupidly I forgot to use the alcohol wipe on the first one (think it is actually this bad bruisey one) how do I keep it clean? I've just left it to be after I stopped the bleeding

Can do. I've been diabetic my whole life so I've had a few of these I'm afraid.

Oh dear, how long does it take to go? Working currently and my goodness it hurts to type. Is it ok for me to leave it to air? I haven't put anything on it after I stopped the bleeding

Don't worry about it, it's just a bruise. Just normal hygiene for keeping it clean. If you had a tiny cut you wouldn't be doing anything.extra.

Can I just do my normal activities then? I don't have any anti septic stuff sadly, I did have a plaster on it but it kept falling off so I took it off completely.

Of course you can. It's a bruise.

Are you getting help with your anxiety? Your reaction to this and other threads suggests it is getting out of control,

Yes, I know - it is bad. I'm starting counselling next week and recently started on citalopram.

It's a bruise, it will go, don't use alcohol wipes before any test, just wash your fingers with soap, why are you doing these, are you diabetic, you sound very anxious, I hope the counselling helps you, I use the side of my finger after squidging it up a bit

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/11/2023 17:35

When they prick my finger when u give blood sometimes that hurts more than the donation

The reason I did it was because my thyroid was checked a few weeks ago due to panic attacks random ones too, I have anxiety but never panic! Blood was done and my tsh was raised, which they said could be the cause but they'll monitor, since then I've had heat intolerance, weird random temps and then goes back down, constipation, anxiety x 10000 - it just doesn't feel right! So I thought maybe if I do a more broader thyroid test il get more answers potentially

I was advised to aim nearer the side of the finger and not to use the index finger. It's not always practical depending on how often you need to do finger prick. If you can pick and choose, use a lesser used finger so if you bruise it, it's less inconvenient

Littlebitofacold · 13/11/2023 17:39

You’re not supposed to do it on the pad of the finger like that.

Try and keep in mind there are literal babies and toddlers having to do this multiple times per day as they have Type 1 diabetes. Just trying to put things in perspective.

It's on the side? That's where I did it & I know, thanks, just never done one before so panicked

Looks like the pad to me but ok whatever you say. Hope all is well with the results.

I put my finger at an angle to try and get the image, it's definitely on the side but thanks

I have that happen fairly often. Usually because I had to press hard to get the lancet to release. It'll be sore for a day, a bit annoying!

Also, use your middle or ring finger, not your index. Prick a little to the side of center. Like you, I also do these for thyroid, as well as iron panels and a few other things.
