Itchy patches of skin on 6 year old - any ideas?

My DD has for several years said every now and then that her skin is itchy. Its never been a big deal and usually sorted with some body lotion after bathtime.

However, the last few weeks it has become a problem. She has patches on various parts of her body that are very itchy. She's scratching a lot, even in her sleep. Some (not all) of these patches have a slightly shiny red rash (quite possibly as a result of the scratching).

I've stopped using soap, tried E45, Oilatum in the bath, aqueous cream and changed my washing powder.

Can anyone suggest anything else before I go to my GP?

Many thanks,
Meid

Do the patches go away after a while?

Meid · 11/03/2008 19:06

Thanks!

No, they don't seem to. It seems to be the same areas that she complains about as being itchy.

Are they scabby, raised, where are they? Are they worse for heat exposure. Do they weep?

Thanks.

The patches are her inner thighs, back of her armpits, in between her shoulder blades, front of her neck, across the belly button area and her shins. Mmm I think thats it.

The inner thigh ones and back of armpit ones are slight red and shiny. None are weeping and to be honest the skin doesn't even look dry.

Try massaging her with extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil every night after her bath. What age is she? You could also try a homeopathic cream. I would also increase the essential fatty acids in her diet - brazil/almonds/oily fish/avocados/seeds or give her a supllement every day to nourish and moisturise the skin form the inside.
Try using a enviro friendly natural washing powder, simple soap, and natural bath and cleaning products too. get rid of any air freshners in the house too as these can all aggrevate sking problems. is she ashmatic too?

My mother has this: Red shiny patch that itches, which is always at the same place. I think it is called 'neurodermatitis'.

I think you should take your DD to the doctor.
