Have I developed asthma in middle age or is it just an exercise thing?

So obviously I know if you exercise hard you will get breathless and maybe your chest feels tight.

But 3x in the last 18 months I've had incidents which have seemed more than that - but they have all been during exercise. So when cycling quite hard twice I've thought what the hell is that noise and realised it's me. That as I'm breathing there is an audible rhythmic squeak. I've stopped, carried on squeaking for a minute and then been OK. I googled at the time and it said exercise induced asthma, narrowing of the airways causes the squeak/wheeze.

But seeing as I was ok afterwards I didn't give too much thought to it.

Happened again on Saturday. I was cycling but I wouldn't say I was going that hard. The squeak came on. I pulled over. Chest felt tight. I started to feel a bit panicy as felt I could not take a breath. It passed after a couple of minutes.

I haven't felt right since. Chest still feels a bit tight. Last night in bed I was coughing and had to keep sitting up as I felt I couldn't breath and chest tightness was worse. Chest feels heavy this morning.

Should I see a GP or will they just laugh and say well you were exercising so it's normal.

Definitely see a GP. Asthma should always be taken seriously. My mum developed asthma in her 60s.

I developed asthma at 40 after a period of intense stress that triggered a few autoimmune conditions. Your symptoms were exactly what I experienced.

See the gp straight away! Asthma attacks are not fun and quite serious, you’ll know when you have one as it feels like drowning but with no water around. If that happens go straight to hospital.

Your gp won’t laugh, asthma is serious.

There is something often wrongly called “cold weather asthma’, but it isn’t asthma. It is seen in those who exercise outdoor and is the bodies response to repeated inhalation of cold air. . Still worth getting checked by a GP.

Go and see your GP… heart disease can also present the same way.
