Tingling feet

DottyMacaroon · 12/11/2023 17:18

So a few years ago I had tingling feet. Went through all the tests and neuro referrals, cause never found. It disappeared on its own (or I stopped noticing it)

it’s back.

the only thing I can think of is I did have borderline ferritin levels at the time (19, not deficient until 15 and below), which I took iron tablets for and got them up to normal levels. I don’t know if that coincided with the tingling going or not.

my latest ferritin shows it’s dropped again from 79 to 27.

google doesn’t suggest tingling feet as a sign of borderline ferritin, but I thought I’d see if there are any real life examples?

I’ve started taking a multivitamin which contains iron but not actual iron supplements.

i’m loathe to go back to the GP because I’ve done all this before.

Low b12 can cause tingling, it seems low iron could affect that too.

Data from our work suggest that iron deficiency could affect many metabolic pathways, including vitamin B12, folate and lipids. These changes normalize after iron therapy, even in women with baseline low levels of serum vitamin B12

DottyMacaroon · 12/11/2023 19:07

Thank you. B12 was normal before but I paid privately for loading doses as I’m aware the UK thresholds are low. It didnt make any difference, which is why I’m wondering if it could be the borderline ferritin.

Iron and B12 levels are related, and B12 deficiency can definitely cause tingly extremities. Supplements and a well balanced diet. Try some magnesium too.

DottyMacaroon · 12/11/2023 19:32

Thank you. I’ve just started a multivitamin which includes iron, separate magnesium and b12.

Could it be worth checking for hypothyroidism? I have really bad plantar fasciitis at the moment and have been reading about the link between the two...

DottyMacaroon · 12/11/2023 21:12

I did have my thyroid checked recently and all was fine there.

I think PF is really common isn’t it? I had that in 2021, bloody painful!

I get it too and so worried about it. My iron has been consistently low, last time being 8. my tingling gets worse when I take iron supplements. (Which may be a coincidence). What kind/level of neuro referral did you get in the past?

DottyMacaroon · 10/12/2023 12:08

I saw a neurologist who wasn’t concerned in the slightest as other than altered sensation, I had no neurological deficits. I was diagnosed with functional neurological disorder which is a bit like fibromyalgia in the neuro world - they can’t find a cause so they give you that diagnosis.

im not worried about it but I would like it to go away. Might try some iron tablets next but had other things going on so haven’t been thinking about it much.

Hi. Have you been tested for pernicious anaemia ie low b12 and malabsorption?
If you have that, only injections do the trick of raising it.

Do you have cold hands/feet? Tried excercise? Good luck.

DottyMacaroon · 10/12/2023 18:49

Yup. All fine.

I always have cold hands and feet!

@DottyMacaroon How are you? Did you ever solve your problem. I've had all the tests going with neuro too and to no avail!

Sunshiiine · 30/01/2025 20:21

@Lollyl88 i am the OP, but can’t get my username back as I’m on a different account now.

it kind of sorted itself out again. I got my ferritin levels up but it didn’t go away, and then one day it was just better again but I didn’t notice exactly when. So I don’t know if it was ever ferritin or something else, but I think it’s something I’m likely going to have off and on.

Lollyl88 · 30/01/2025 20:43

@Sunshiiine Thanks for coming back to me 😊 Glad it has really eased a lot for you. Just wondering at all if you're on the mini pill
Or have a mirena? I'm wondering if there's hormones are linked or I'm in peri. Just so weird and frustrating. My story is so similar to yours!

Sunshiiine · 30/01/2025 21:11

@Lollyl88 no, I haven’t done hormonal contraception for about 13 years.

another thing that I remembered is magnesium. That’s really important for nerves etc too. Do you take anything like mag glycinate? X

Lollyl88 · 30/01/2025 22:05

@Sunshiiine Thanks for replying again. And I will definitely try some magnesium - not taking that supplement and will try anything!

Foxgloverr · 30/01/2025 22:11

I've had this on and off for 10 years. Also diagnosed with FBD but it's my only symptom. I think it's due to stress/anxiety in my case.

100PercentFaithful · 30/01/2025 22:15

It really sounds like Coeliac disease with the low iron and neuropathy. Have you been tested?

@100PercentFaithful yes, negative.
