The other child would have been infectious. I dont know how likely it is for your DS to have caught it though.

Meeely2 · 11/03/2008 14:51

i would say highly likely, can incubate for up to two weeks - if he gets grouchy and under the weather, look out for spots a few days later.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 14:51

its possible, infection period is before spots appear

MehgaLegs · 11/03/2008 14:52

Quite likely he'll get it but not for another two weeks.

My DS2 had it at half term, then my other three came out in spots two weeks to th e day later. For two days before the spots appeared they were grizzley, tired, coldy and complained of tummy ache and feeling sick. Also loss of appetite.

HTH

mad4mybaby · 11/03/2008 14:54

ok so ds is 20 months so cant tell me...is it just a case of grizzles, etc? This am he had a bad belly and been whiney...could he get ill that quick or not for another 2 weeks?

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 14:56

whiney/temp/tired etc just out of sorts

would get in some calpol/piriton or medised/teatree antiseptic cream just in case

squeaver · 11/03/2008 14:59

Quite likely - most contagious period is the three days before the spots appear. Although my dd had it before Christmas and passed it on to no-one, despite being in contact with loads of other kids.

mad4mybaby · 11/03/2008 15:00

my sis said calamine lotion didnt help her ds with itcing. My ds has bad exsma (sp!!)and itches in sleep making him self bleed so the itching is already a prob and have to be careful what goes on his skin(has special creams) what will be the best creams?

Unlikely mad unless he and his friend were exposed to same child who had it originally.

dizzy - all better and back to school thank God.

By the way I found Claritin worked better than Piriton but only for DCs aged over 2. You give one dose and it lasts 12 hours. Only discovered this late on though .

mad4mybaby · 11/03/2008 15:03

oh no! I HATE it when people say diff things!! I know will just have to see!

cannot recommene nelsons teatree antiseptic cream enough, used it for me, had cp few yrs ago and on dd - fab stuff!

BigBadMouse · 11/03/2008 15:21

Infectious period is 2-3 days before spots appear but many children are repeatedly exposed to it and don't get it at the time. My DD1 was exposed to it pretty much constantly for 4 months before she got it! DD2 has been exposed to it repeatedly since early Jan and still hasn't got it. She is grumpy at times and off her food but no sign of spots.

It can take up to 21 days for it to appear after infection - ave is about 17 days they say.

DD1 had bad excema on her feet at the time she got it and it got infected due to getting CP spots over it. Keep and eye out for that and take your DS to the doc if you suspec tit is happening as he will need ABs to get it to heal. Good news is that DD1 excema cleared up almost completely after getting CP

MehgaLegs · 11/03/2008 15:48

DS4 has bad eczema and the spots on his eczema patches were the worst.

I didn;t dare put any cream on him as he reacts to everything. We wree advised to use calamine with glycerin as it is not so drying. This was successful on DS1 and DS2 but not on DS3 and didn't use on DS4.

I am sorry to tell you it was hell - three nights of no sleep but he is now fine and back to normal. the only way I could calm DS4 and stop him itching was oatmeal baths (put porridge oats in a sock and tie it to the taps and fill the bath through ity, very soothing), keeping him really cool and watching lots of DVDs.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 15:50

is it wrong as a pg woman to find the idea of an oatmeal bath quite appestising??!!

Carnival · 11/03/2008 15:53

Piriton worked well for my DD, she did hardly any scratching.

S1ur · 11/03/2008 15:54

It is possible to have been infected but not a certainty.

If he has you won't know for another week or two, when he might get grizzly, slight temp, mild flu stuff but might not have any of these.

The spots are infectious for roughly a week or until crusted over.

Cool baths might help, and calpol if seems painful.

mad4mybaby · 11/03/2008 16:20

does anyone know of anything anti histamine that doesnt make them drowsy? I know for under 2 they are restricted as to what he can have... he has allerief (anti his frm gp) and can only give him at night as makes him drowsy!

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 16:21

check with chemist, only some of them have the drowsy stuff in it and I can't remember which ones, in fact am no use so am going to stop typing and let someone useful help you
