Hi I’m 6 months post partum I had late onset gestational diabetes and throughout my pregnancy if I went too long without eating I’d get nauseous and when I finally ate I’d vomit (only if I went too long without eating) I never had this problem before my baby now even after I’ve had my baby I still have the same issue only I don’t vomit anymore just get nauseous, i didn’t eat anything yesterday except a small chocolate bar as I had something going on and forgot to eat this morning I felt faint I had a migraine my whole body was shaking my legs my hands everywhere I ate a bar of chocolate and after about 20 minutes I started to feel ok again, but everytime I go awhile without eating I feel sick and get shaky

Low blood sugar.

Your body needs fuel. When you don't give it any it reacts.

It's totally normal.

Gestational diabetes sometimes doesn’t go away after birth, but turns into Type 2 diabetes - have you been tested? I’d make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible.

In the meantime you need to treat your body kindly - eat little and often, and try to keep your blood sugars stable so eat things that give slow-release energy e.g. porridge etc and don’t skip meals.

Low blood sugar. It’s a completely normal physical reaction.

chocolate will give you quick sugar highs but then big lows too. Try more complex carbs for longer sugar release to stabilise your blood sugars.

I doubt it's anything to do with type 2 diabetes - unless you inject insulin diabetics tend not to have low sugars

It is just that you need to eat - why are you not eating properly?

Lollibert · 12/11/2023 12:22

@aswarmofmidges it never use to happen to me before tho I’d get hungry but I never use to feel weak and shaky and I had a lot going on yesterday so I forgot to eat and by the time I got to bed I was too tired to get up to make something but day to day I do eat 2-3 meals but in between I get shaky and nauseous i never had this getting pregnant so that’s why I found it strange

Your body isn't the same as it was before you were pregnant. It can take up to 18 months to fully recover from pregnancy, and you'll never be the same as you were before.

Your body is telling you you can't go without food like you used to.

Hypoglycaemia. It’s a simple as your body being less capable of releasing glucose steadily from reserves. Pregnancy will do it, getting older will do it and a myriad of chronic health conditions will also do it. I could live off fresh air when I was a teenager. I was absolutely tiny and could sometimes forget to eat all day. As I approach middle age, I have the issue that if I don’t eat at all I will pass out and if I eat a large meal I will go all drowsy and useless afterwards so now I must graze, little and often throughout the day. Try it, you’ll probably feel better.

This had always happened to me and I've never questioned it. A quick fix is a can of full fat coke or tea with sugar in it. A better option, as people have said, is to have more frequent, smaller meals throughout the day. Please eat!!
