Thrush in pregnancy

Anyone have any alternative thrush remedies? I used to get thrush all the time, was told to give up dairy - and hey presto it stopped. But when pregnant I crave dairy and lo and behold I now have raging thrush. I'm allergic to canesten and have been told by the doc that I can't use Diflucan or daktacort when pregnant. I've tried putting live yoghurt on the affected area, but it seemed to make it worse and I wondered if that was because it was dairy based. I'm taking non dairy acidophilus capsules like they're going out of fashion but it's been almost a week now and no real improvement. I'm off on hols on Sat and desperate to feel well. All advice appreciated.

Cl, I sympathise, I had this when I was pregnant, and was too busy to even get to the dr for about a fortnight...it was agony! Thrush is a fungus isn't it? therefore Nystatin should clear it up, this is a common anti fungal drug which I took for a previous candida infection (same thing, different affected area!). It needs a doctor's prescription. Failing that, garlic is a stronger anti fungal agent than most drugs - are you desparate enough to smear yourself with garlic puree??!! Perhaps you had better check with the dr first! I have used garlic for athletes foot.

I don't think live yoghurt does any good, as far as I understand it, it works on candida in the gut simply because the acidophilus bacteria replace the candida in the gut.
Hope you manage to sort it out.

Two things: have you used the acidophilus as a pessary get it straight to the heart of the problem. Secondly and I'd check on this as you are pregnant i use 1 drop of tea tree oil on the gusset of my knickers - it works a treat.

When you are not pregnant tee tree on a tampon
really stops it in its tracks. I got this advice from an American website I found after doing a search on yeast.

\thanks for those - too late for the Nystatin - I'd never get a prescription now, but may try if it's still here when I get back. Might ask chemist if they have any acidophilus pessaries - didn't know they existed. Thanks

I think I have thrush for the first time. It's Easter sunday, my daughter has had a raging temperature for two days and I'm in agony. I'm very sore and itchy but I'm not aware of any discharge. Does this sound like thrush, anyone? I tried the live yogurt last night but no improvement. Also, I am 11 weeks pregnant, third time and I've never had it before, might it keep recurring this time round? Help!

I heard too much Marmite can cause it - which would explain why I had permanent thrush in my first pregnancy as I practically lived on Marmite on toast, but not in my second pregnancy. No advice for healing it though sorry.

Qd & Cl I understand what you are going through. I used to get it a lot I was so pleased when Diflucan was released. I was lucky enough not to suffer from it when pregnant. I found that warm baths gave temporary relief. Would a bath with a few drops of tea tree help? See doctor first. As for yoghurt it never helped me.

Qd, I also found that due to hormone changes sex without extra lubrication caused similar symptoms.

It might sound a bit strange but having suffered chronically whilst pregnant I found any opportunity to go knickerless was very welcome relief (what with extra weight and heat in said area). Also, it might be a bit of a gamble but I was told that those internal creams are OK when pregnant - not sure though about that.

Dear QD you have all my sympathy. The last bout lasted about three weeks and then seemed to go away of its own accord - I took acidophilus - lots of it and generally avoided alcohol, dairy and sugar - v dull. Sadly it's now been back for over a week - had a couple of weeks of feeling OK, drank red wine, ate choc and made mistake of having sex and wham bam back to square one. Hubby now on a course of canesten - just in case it's his fault - much to his disgust. Most people use that and it's fine in pregnancy - it's just I'm v allergic to it - though doc says she's never come across anyone else who is so I'd go for that if I were you, you can buy it over the counter. Have been to health food shop - tea tree expert- who's given me tea tree, organic tampons and suggests mixing olive oil and tea tree and dipping tampon in that - loath to do it as scared I'll have reaction to that and make it worse, but may try later. Have also been to nurse to have swabs taken to make sure it is thrush after all - as like QD I'm hot and itchy, but no different discharge. Very bored by it though and can't bear idea of having it for next four months!! Been to homeopath who took one look at cold sore on my lip and decided I had herpes everywhere which I'm sure I don't!!....so on homeopathic pills for that - will let you know. Good luck

I'm also suffering from thrush for the first time while pregnant. I did some reading on it and found their are special non-yeast diets to control it. I feel unsafe while pregnant to follow them fully, however I found that cutting out beer, wine and breads (yeast products) has helped a lot. However I find cutting out breads very hard. I'm also drinking and eating live yogurt. I wasn't sure if taking acidophilus capsules was O.K. while pregnant. I'm using a tea- trea oil powder around the area it helps externally.
Eating a raw garlic clove, is supposed to help if you can manage it.Apperantly it's the smelly part of garlic that is anti-bacterial which is lost while cooking. I'm trying to think of a way to serve it for hubby and me so I'm not the only smelly one, mabye in a salad? Good luck , if you have time do some research on Candida on a health site.

Good to know I'm not the only one... 11 weeks pg and like Cl am allergic to creams like Canesten & Daktarin - only make the itching worse. When I'm not pregnant the only thing that seems to cure it when I have a severe bout is Diflucan, which is obviously off the menu at the moment. I've been trying Nelsons' Candida homeopathic remedy as it's helped in the past, but doesn't seem to do anything this time. Thanks for reminding me of acidophilus, I'll go and get some today, and I'll ask the midwife about tea tree oil as well.

Diet does help though: avoid anything with yeast in (try replacing normal bread with pitta bread, as it has very little yeast) - and yes unfortunately that includes Marmite - as well as blue cheese, mushrooms and sugar (I know! really hard to do but apparently yeast infections feed on the stuff). That was recommended by my acupuncturist a couple of years ago and since then I can't remember having any major attack. I blame the irritation of progesterone pessaries I've had to use for the past 6 weeks for this one... Good luck!
