Skin peelingoff feet

Ds1 (9) showed me his feet last night and said "Look at my skin". He has huge flaps of skin peeling off as if he has very bad sunburn(although his feet aren't red!) He said his feet itch slightly.

On one foot it is peeling on his heel and towards the centre of his foot. On the other foot it is central and towards his toes. He is a sweaty boy (lovely) and he does get hot sweaty feet, but that is normally in the warmer months.

Could it be Athlete's foot? I have no idea what that is myself just something I've heard of!

Has he been on antibiotics recently or any other medication? It could be a reaction. Happened to me once. If not then sorry I'm not sure what it can be.

pigsinmud · 10/03/2008 23:08

No nothing! All I did was smother it in moisturiser - he wasn't impressed!

I had a really nasty mystery virus once and a week or two later the skin on my palms and my feet peeled off in great flaps.

Which was weird but the skin underneath was healthy and once it had peeled that was it.

pigsinmud · 10/03/2008 23:12

That's it - the skin underneath looks fine. He just has huge flaps hanging around!

Just looked up athletes foot and it's not that.

Ds2's skin peeled off when he was 8 days old, but he was seriously ill at the time. Ds1 is fine and has been fine all term.

My DD had this and I put it down to sweaty feet made worse by cheap shoes which didn't let her feet breathe. Got leather shoes and cotton socks which cured it.

pigsinmud · 10/03/2008 23:18

I have a feeling it must be sweaty feet mears. However he does have cotton socks and leather shoes. We've had to do the 100% cotton clothing big time this year!

It could be his horrible trainers(which he loves) and smelly football boots, which he has on most of every weekend.

It sounds exactly like athletes foot to me. Schilke - what makes you think it isn't now?

pigsinmud · 10/03/2008 23:20

Lubyloo - I looked at some photos and it didn't seem quite right. The skin underneath ds1's looks perfectly healthy. It is just as if he is shedding a layer of skin!

he hasn't had any odd rashes, fevers, in the last few weeks?

Where's the itch?

Remotew · 10/03/2008 23:25

Oh. I blamed a reaction to antibiotics for mine. It happened to my hands also. Perhaps it wasnt and just a strange virus as I had some illness hence the medicine. Yes the skin was healthy underneath as well.

Heated · 10/03/2008 23:25

Don't feet peel occasionally when you're a kid? Or maybe it it's just me and your sweaty-footed ds?!

If they aren't cracked/dry then I'd assume they are just peeling, but if the former then maybe think athletes foot.

pigsinmud · 10/03/2008 23:26

No dolally I think he's been the healthiest in the family. The itch is just where the skin is peeling. Not sure if it's itching because he's been pulling the skin or if it just itches generally. It's not itchy between his toes and doesn't look sore.

I also had antibiotics abouteve, though for some reason I didn't think the peeling was a reaction to those. What was even stranger was that three months later all my finger nails showed a dip crosswise in them.

I've heard the nail thing can happen after a serious illness or trauma. My illness wasn't that serious (fever and rash - I wondered afterwards if it had been a spider or tick bite) though it was unexplained.

Sorry to highjack schilke! Is the skin that's coming off dead like after sunburn? Like it comes off easily?

pigsinmud · 11/03/2008 07:33

Hi - yes it comes off easily. Sunburn without the sore red skin.

This sounds like what my daughter has just been diagnosed as having - juvenile plantar dermatosis. Initially the GP kept saying it was athletes foot (though I thought it wasn't after 4 trips to the GP and numerous creams and potions!) so I went back and insisted on a referral. The hospital diagnosed the above, try googling it!
