Chesty Cough, coughing up a little blood - should I get it checked out?

I get fairly regular coughs and they usually take the same pattern.

I start off with a cold that develops into a dry cough, then a chesty cough with (sorry if TMI) yellow/green phlem. It lasts a week or 2 and I never go to the doctor as it's pretty predictable (does make me feel pretty rough though)

This time it's different. The coughs been making me sick (although that could be the 11 weeks pg) and it's just strted being chesty and I'm bringing up some blood - not a whole lot but everytime I cough it's red. I had thought that some of the throwing up before was red but put it down to the fact that I'd been eating strawberries.

Going to the doctor (either a 2 week wait for an appointment or a 2.5 hour wait for an emergency appointment) is such a pain and since I don't want to take antibiotics if I can avoid it, is there any point in going. Or is this something I should get checked out.

Sorry it's long and thanks for any advice.

Yes, go to a doctor. I don't know what it could be but I don't think it would be an overreaction to see a doctor. I would be straight there. I guess it could be a graze in your throat. But get it checked out.

stiffit · 10/03/2008 20:44

Is there anyway you could go to your maternity clinic as first port of call so that you don't have to waste that wait .. the doctors there might have five minutes to discuss it.

Beauregard · 10/03/2008 20:45

If you are coughing up green phlem it is a sign of infection see your GP .I agree with stiffit that the blood could be a burst vessel or graze.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 10/03/2008 20:46

It's probably a lower lung infection ninja. And you've burst some blood vessels with coughing. Go and get your chest listened to and some antibiotics. And got for the "emergency option" as 2 weeks is too long to wait. Don't ignore it; you could end up with pneumonia.

I think my Mat clinic's just once a week and just nurses. The silly thing is I feel a lot better today and was meant to be working tomorrow.

Thanks

Hi Ninja

First of all, I would be sick if I even sneezed at 11 weeks (in fact I did this at 8 - 9 m too I hope that makes you a bit calmer.

I suggest you call your Surgery, explain you are PG and are coughing up blood, make them see you tomorrow. It could well be that you have damaged a few capillaries in your throat between the coughing and the sickness. Being PG changes your body so much that odd things happen all the time. If they do not play ball call you can see if there is a walk in clinic near you. Take your notes and just turn up. Better than A&E.

Hope you feel better soon.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 10/03/2008 20:53

Another thing is that it may not be an infection - just that your mucus membranes are v. senstive in pregnancy and it's much easier for your nose/throat etc to bleed.

I scared myself silly "vomtiting blood" in my first pregnancy when I was sick constantly for virtually the whole nine months but my doctor was really laid back about it and said it was just caused by retching so often.

Hi SHPHH (that's a great song - I love that album)

That is a good point and makes more sense. I actually feel a lot better today than I have for the last few days so it odesn't make sense that my cough is getting worse. It's definitely rougher and could just be grazing. I may go with that expanation if I don't feel worse.

Can you tell I don't want to go to the doctors!!

Go to the Drs.

mother3 · 10/03/2008 21:30

Prob a graze on your throat.I have had a few chest infections .Usaly things get worse before they get better.Just ask get it checked out.It is stupid you have to wait so long for docs appointment.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 10/03/2008 21:51

Best get it checked. It's in the baby's best interests too.

have you got a local-ish walk-in centre, maybe in a nearby town, that you could go to, and explain you couldn't get an appointment with GP. They will prioritise you because you are PG.

northernrefugee39 · 11/03/2008 09:37

Just to add that when you're preganant, your blood vessels are far more sensitive, your nose can bleed more, your gums etc, so don't panick about the blood.
it's something to do with hormones I think.
But i would get it checked out.

Hello all,

I need to know what is the conclusion from this topic (coughing blood during pregnancy) coz my younger sister experienced the same symptom. But I think my sister bloody cough more like blood vomit started with coughing. So the blood is quite much (not little) and pretty scary for me to see.

Yesterday was the 2nd blood cough she had. She went to hospital and the doctor diagnose her of having TB (tubercolosis) but doctor need futher test to be certain. But my sister refuse to do X-ray, she affraid that the beam may hurt the baby.

She cough mostly at night before going to sleep. She was fine and not coughing during the day. Just coughing before sleep or when the weather is cold.

I thought this sickness only happened to my sister, but I now found many articles or forum that questioning the same symptom. Is this some kind of pregnancy sickness? If many pregnant women experienced the same thing, then maybe it is.

I hope it is not a serious illness, coz bleeding from inside is scary.

siousan80 - Has the hospital done any other tests on your sister to test for TB?
