Feel like I can't empty my bladder?

As the title says, I'm constantly sitting on the toilet after having a wee, for 20 minutes at a time as I have the sensation that I need to go again but nothing comes out.

I am very, very overweight, but am making changes to adress that. And have already lost some weight. Is this something I should address with my GP or should I just accept it? I'm concerned that this could be a sign of diabetes?

Sounds like a urine infection. Speak to your GP. They should be able to prescribe some anti biotics to get rid of it.

@OurChristmasMiracle that is what I thought, but I don't feel unwell or in pain. I have an unrelated GP appointment in the morning so hopefully they won't get arsey with me if I ask about it. They sometimes do as it's one issue at a time/per appointment.

This happened to my partner a few months ago and it was kidney stones.

It went on for a few weeks and started off with struggling to go go toilet. Then he got prescribed antibiotics. Then his urine sample came back clear. Went back a few days later got given more antibiotics.

No pain at this point.

A week or so later he got horrific back and side pain. Had to go to a&e and it was kidney stones, They thankfully passed on their on and he got given strong meds.

Definitely mention to GP

You can have symptomless UTIs. Urine retention is not a sign of diabetes.

You need to see your GP.

You are sitting too long on the toilet. When wee pee our bladder never empties fully. If anyone say there fir a few minutes longer they would pee again. I have kidney disease and always sit a few minutes longer to empty my bladder. I'm also overweight which puts pressure on the bladder.

I'm glad you've got an appointment, at least you can mention this to the GP.

Thanks all, the GP said I have to make another appointment to discuss it. So will be a few weeks yet. I think I was being paranoid as I am pre diabetic and know that can effect urine frequency. She did say it doesn't sound like any kind of infection and is probably down to my weight. In my experience most things are down to my weight so I really need to get my head down and sort myself out.

@YerArseInParsley I don't think that is the case, I only sit for longer as I feel like i haven't finished if that makes sense? Hopefully if I carry on with my weight loss journey and keep drinking plenty of water it will pass.

It could be a prolapse. Prolapses are exacerbated by extra weight. I had this issue and it turns out I had a uterine prolapse and my womb was sitting on my badder forming a little pocket of bladder that wasn't being emptied.
At the same time they also found I had a kidney issue that can cause incomplete emptying.

TomAllensWhiskMic · 06/11/2023 22:24

I had this as a symptom of an ovarian cyst. The cyst was large and was blocking my bladder from emptying properly.

@SallyWD I have a feeling that may be the case that I have a prolaose. My weight is obviously the main issue but I'm doing my best to address that

Nothing to add on what it could be. But have you tried learning forwards when on the toilet after your first wee? This always seems to help me empty my bladder.
