What is this weird thing on my child’s finger? (Picture)

I noticed it last week when we were swimming, but his hands were wrinkly and I dismissed it as a wart and then forgot about it. But noticed it again when we were washing hands next to each other today and it looks sort of worse and different out of chloriney water.

What is this weird thing on his finger?! (He’s seven.)

Looks like a wart to me

Whatcouldthisbe8 · 05/11/2023 21:47

It’s the odd lumpiness that made me unsure! I haven’t seen a wart like that before. He’s a real nail biter as well.

Have a Google of periungual warts. I am definitely not a medic but that's what it looks like to me.

I had terrible warts on my hands when I was a child - 20+ of the things. Tried bazooka etc. (I wasn't prepared to have that many frozen off!) It didn't work. Eventually they just vanished overnight when I was about 9.

Oh gosh that’s exactly what it looks like!! I haven’t heard of them!

I'm not sure what the recommendation is for dealing with them - I don't know if there's a risk of damage to the nail bed permanently etc if not treated? I would suspect the answer is yes and that they are more likely to need treatment rather than a wait it out approach compared to other warts.

It seems to be growing half under his fingernail so probably best to try and sort fast - do you reckon this is a GP thing or a pharmacist thing?

Looks like a verruca to me with all the black spots.

Notcookie · 05/11/2023 21:58

Try pharmacist first.

GrittyTunnocks · 05/11/2023 21:58

Looks very earth. I have no idea what the recommendation is for children so a routine GP appointment is probably a good idea.

If hes a biter, there’s a chance he will transfer it to his face so a plaster might be a good idea?

Papillon23 · 05/11/2023 21:59

You could try a pharmacist first and get some salicylic acid but the doctor can prescribe stronger stuff if it's not working.

I imagine it will be really important for him to at the very least stop buying that one nail as well.

Blessedbethefruitz · 05/11/2023 22:01

No comments on the actual wart issue, but the finger looks inflamed too, could be infected due to the warts (if that what it is)?

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 05/11/2023 22:03

I’d put a bandaid on it to keep it out of his mouth too

Fungal nail infection

Fifiellz · 05/11/2023 22:22

My daughter had one like that. You need to really piss it off so the body knows to fight it.

File it every day and then apply Salactol solution from the chemist.

My daughters was gone within a week and they don't reoccur once the body recognises it as a virus.

Tried all the freezing stuff and it didn't work at all.

Sierra26 · 05/11/2023 22:24

I had these all over my hands as a young teenager. I used salicylic acid but it was liquid nitrogen treatments that kept them at bay. the treatment was painful though and left me covered in blisters. Eventually they disappeared and I now have no scarring or signs of them at all.

This is an interesting theory and it’s got me wondering what it was that truly caused mine to clear up. They did just sort of disappear and never saw any sign again. So as you say my body just have learned it needed to fight them (and how), but I wish I could put my finger on what it was! I burned one once on the grill (by accident) and it died and fell off. Maybe that angered it enough!!

This product is the absolute business OP. I had tried all sorts of products on the warts on DD's fingers and bought this expecting it to be equally useless. It was amazing, check out the reviews from those who had as much success as we did.

This is all very helpful! Thank you! Good tip on the plaster - he is a big time nail biter and I don’t want it to transfer anywhere.

I’ll take him to the pharmacist after school today and get some treatment for it - here’s hoping it can go quickly!
