Reverse pre diabetes - is it doable

I have just tipped ever so, ever so slightly into the pre diabetes range, 5.6. Is it reasonable to hope that lifestyle changes will reverse this or is that unrealistic?

Absolutely! My sister had very similar and is no longer pre diabetic following diet and lifestyle changes :)

Hi

Not sure what measurement that is (sounds more like a cholesterol reading maybe) but my HBA1C in February was 44 - (diabetes is48). Last one in July was 39 (pre diabetes is 42). I got it down below pre diabetes by totally cutting carbs to less than 90g a day , gluten free, upping water and losing a stone and a half and walking a lot more.

my DH got his HBA1C down from 52 to 39 ie diabetic to normal
he lost 3 stone in weight and cut snacking between meals to zero he has a lot of will power so once he sets his mind to do something he will do it. His diet was bad though several packets of crisps a day 2-3 choclate biscuits handfuls of sweets and fizzy juice ( he is now on zero sugar lilt he knows it is not the best but he doesn't drink tea or coffee or water really) he has upped veg to half a plate at lunch and dinner time. He works physical so still eats more food than most but his weight has been steady for about a year

I assumed it was this person's fasting glucose reading, in mmols... HBA1C is the average blood glucose level over the past 2-3 months.

My friend did this by reducing carbs and losing weight. It was fairly straightforward once she got into the habit. She says she feels a lot healthier now.

@gr1981 , yes this is what I meant @Crikeyalmighty . I actually live abroad where it is measured in mg/dl, it is 101 and I used an online converter ...
Does sound like a bit of a wake up call and time to ditch the carbs.

Totally, there are a few useful Facebook groups that are very helpful too. One (reversing type 2 diabetes support group) basically is 30g of carbs per day and mainly protein and green veg. They have a useful list of what’s good and bad in terms of foods and bs levels. They’re very strict but even if you don’t want to go the whole hog, they have lots of helpful tips.

Yes. I had a blood test and I was pre diabetic. Another one 6 months later was fine.
However, I before the first test I was stuffing my face with sweet food as I was worried about losing weight. After that I just started eating normally.

Absolutely! My mum just did it! Hba1c was 47. After 6 months of low carb, high protein and veg, she is now 39! So from almost diabetic to not even pre diabetic anymore!

My friend did it by stopping alcohol. No other dietary changes.

Thanks all. I am feeling hugely relieved that there seems to be a way back from this. @Vaquita5 , that's good to know, I have reduced my alcohol to practically nothing over the last couple of months.

I reduced my HbA1C from 43 to 39. A GP friend of mine advised reducing carbs and doing 16:8 intermittent fasting. I lost 1 1/2 stone and I am in the normal BMI range.

You can do it by limiting carbs and losing weight. I refuse to give up my wine though. My last Hba1c was 46. It has been lower in the past.

Hba1c from 88 to 36 in 3 months.
I eat low carb , exercised more and lost weight.
Have been in remission from diabetes for 4 years now.
I eat normally but substitute cauliflower/aubergine for potato, rice , pasta
no root vegetables
no sugar
no grains
bake my own low carb bread (vital wheat gluten)
stick to low glycemic fruit ie berries
no alcohol

I eat a lot of salad , nuts,Greek yoghurt , 90% dark chocolate , green veg , protein .

Yes! Low carb is the way to do it. Faster if you do keto and intermittent fasting.

the key things are losing weight about 10% at least ( unless you are already normal weight in which case you need more specific medical advice) stop snacking so your body has time to adjust to one meal and deal with it before more food arrives. DH's doctor advised to try for 12 hours between last food at night and breakfast but even 10 will help at great deal especially if previously it was only 7-8 hours many people manage 11-12 hours between dinner and breakfast but dinner is not the last food they eat ( snacks by tv milky drinks before bed etc )

A friend did it over the last year.
She stopped eating rice (her main carb), home cooked food (she was big on takeaways living alone)
Walking more
Lost 5 stone
