always feeling phlegmy with blocked up feeling in ears and nasal area - what could this be?

Constantly feel as though my nasal area, ears, back of throat etc is always full of fluid.

I can’t quite explain it fully but I suffer from a rhaspy feeling at the back of my throat, often have a bit of a cough, full feeling in my ears (not a full wax feeling but feels fluid-like), a blocked nostril especially right side and stingy eyes. I also have tinnitus and not sure if this is connected (had an mri for that and all ok).

I also have IBS and haven’t had dairy for 20 years, I don’t eat wheat/gluten and avoid all my known irritants. I’ve looked into which foods can cause nasal congestion and I don’t consume these.

I wonder if it’s some kind of allergy but not sure what it could be.

Any suggestions? It drives me insane and makes me feel quite crappy.

Sounds like sinusitis. I take mometasone nasal spray for this. You'll need to get a prescription.

TeachMeHowTo · 04/11/2023 12:22

You can get any of the hayfever ones too, steroid like the above.

LoreleiG · 04/11/2023 12:25

I get this. It’s general allergy/nasal drip/narrow sinuses. The doctor recommended a nasal spray which I must dig out again. Mine has got worse since Autumn.

GardenGnomic · 04/11/2023 12:25

i had this on one side - hayfever and dysfunctional eustachian tube. Basically hammered the hayfever with Beconase - took months but now can just treat when it starts getting bad.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/11/2023 12:29

I have this too. It’s worse on my left side. I often feel mucus dripping down my throat which is revolting, and am permanently coughing/throat clearing. I take 180 Fexofenadine every morning and a nasal spray twice daily - I’m on Dimysta at the moment but find they can stop working and need switched up.

Mine has ramped up a bit with the weather changing actually.

More than likely this, I have a nasal spray and take an antihistamine at night.

Thanks everyone. I will try the things suggested. Mine has also definitely become worse since the weather has changed, always does.

I have been sporadically feeling a bit weird and dizzy with it. Last time this happened the GP said I had a build up of fluid in my middle ear hence the nasal spray recommendation. I don’t think cold and damp helps but then nor does hayfever!

Localher0 · 04/11/2023 16:59

I've almost the exact same - mainly on my right side. Thought it was swimmers ear at first and had drops but that didn't help. Then steroid drops then nasal spray. Also have taken decongestant and ant histamine. Nothing is touching it. Developed sore throat three days ago and have a weird spot on my left side throat (has tonsils out years ago). Now taking clarithromycin but it's not helping either. I'm so sick of this.

vivainsomnia · 04/11/2023 17:44

Allergies and if worse around this time of the year, likely to be mould.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 04/11/2023 19:27

LoreleiG I do experience sudden slight dizzy spells and wonder if it’s an inner ear issue, I’ll keep a check on it.

Localher0 I’ve not been swimming in years but have been experiencing that same feeling I’d get as a child when I’d been swimming and the water pours out of your ear when you tilt your head. It’s the same feeling as though water is trapped but nothing comes out. Feels very odd, also likeI need to yawn to break the feeling.

vivainsomnia I have read that but have no mould in the house, it’s well ventilated too.

No mould for me either. I feel like I've been diving or flying and I just can't equalise my ear. It constantly crackles and pops when eating and drinking and vibrates with certain frequencies also have post nasal drip and a sore throat. I've been taking anti his times and have never suffered from hay fever. I'm going back to the GP next week .......

Starrrz · 01/09/2025 10:42

@Localher0 hi i know its an old thread but im desperate:( you had the vibration feeling also! Did yours ever go? If so how long did it last for ? X

Localher0 · 02/09/2025 08:46

@Starrrz I ended up having a grommet fitted to drain the fluid that was stuck
in my ear!! It worked but I felt a bit weird as a 50 something when all the other patients were under 5!!

Starrrz · 02/09/2025 09:32

@Localher0 haha that made me giggle lol!! I guess thats what children get isnt it . I have a feeling i will need that as ive had it for a while. How fast were they to fit the grommets? Sorry to ask its just i am so fed up of it. Have you had any issues since ? Xx

Starrrz · 02/09/2025 09:33

@Localher0 also did you have any affects from having it fitted ? X

Localher0 · 05/09/2025 01:32

@Starrrzi ended up paying for it privately so no delays. I think some ENTs can do it under local rather than general and that makes it much quicker. It definitely helped.

Silverbirchleaf · 05/09/2025 03:27

Some of the symptoms you describe was caused by milk protein (not lactose) allergy in my dc. His nose was permanently blocked, and he would make a noise in his throat. He was also semi-constipated at times. We put him goats milk and his symptoms s improved.

He can still eat hard cheese (chedder etc) as the protein is processed out of it, and cooked stuff with milk in, eg cakes. However, when he does have something with cows milk, all the old symptoms return.

Starrrz · 05/09/2025 20:38

@Localher0 can you fly with grommets? X
