Just had 6th bout of (adult) nausea/diarrhoea/bad stomach pains since december - what could it be?

Satruday night I was very nauseous (should've been sick but I'm emetophobic so do anything to avoid vomiting) with awful upper stomach pains, gurgling, griping, diarrhoea (not v watery, but very loose - sorry tmi) and generally feeling dreadful. I feel ok today but still not 100%

Same thing happened last weekend, the weekend before, middle of February, once in January and just before Xmas (diarrhoea was v bad the 1st 2 times)

There's no pattern, ie I can't relate it to anything I've eaten, alcohol etc. No one else in the family has had anything.

I'm really fed up, esp of the nausea because of emetophobia, but also because it floors me for a couple of days each week and I have 2 young children to look after.

Any ideas? Surely a virus wouldn't persist for this long?

You should see your GP...are you stressed out over something? Could it be IBS?

B1977 · 10/03/2008 15:37

Apparently you can catch the horrible noro virus more than once so it could possible be that? Bad luck if so but I suppose better than a condition. Hope the GP is helpful.

bossykate · 10/03/2008 15:37

are you on any medication?

i have had d&v from a strong prescribed painkiller, and have also had it as the result of taking sumatriptan (for migraine) while on anti-depressants.

amazonianwoman · 10/03/2008 15:38

No, not stressed. Have always had an iron constitution and very regular (daily) bowel movements. Isn't IBS linked with irregularity and/or constipation? Don't know much about it!

ibs, ulcerative colitis?

you need to see your gp

amazonianwoman · 10/03/2008 15:40

No medication either. Friend thinks it's norovirus, but can't believe I'd catch it 6 times? Or that it would linger that long?

Thanks for replies btw

It could be:

Stress. I get this, often when I am under stress.

Supplement - Vitamin C sometimes sets me off.

Caffeine - too much, ditto.

Something disagreeing with you that you haven't tracked down yet.

IBS...I don't know much about it?

I can sympathise. It's horrid isn't it - especially as my Mum knows it is stress related with me, so gets resentful of having to help with the children as I think she blames me

dinny · 10/03/2008 15:42

I've got something simliar, AW, it's awful

amazonianwoman · 10/03/2008 15:42

Have just made GP appointment...

LittleMissNorty · 10/03/2008 15:43

I should think if it was norovirus, the rest of your family would get it. Its very contaigous, however careful you are....

Take yourself off to the GP....

Good luck

FloraPosteschild · 10/03/2008 15:44

I guess it could be germ related, somehow - fellow emetophobe here, so I always prefer to blame something I imagine I can 'control'...

Niecie · 10/03/2008 15:54

Does it only happen at the weekends?

I wouldn't have thought it was Noro because you would have been sick with that. Also although you don't have immunity for long I did read that you are immune for a few weeks afterwards.

I would either go for stress related or it is related to something you do or eat at the weekend but not the rest of the week.

I had IBS for a while that made me feel terrible but it used to come and go.

Taking live yoghurt each day makes me feel more protected against d/v bugs. Either an actual yoghurt or that yakult drink.

I started doing that after 4 bouts of illness when my first was 18m old.

All the best.

amazonianwoman · 10/03/2008 18:29

Allergic to children or DH perhaps??

4 times out of 6 it has been at the weekend, but I can't tie it in with any different behaviour/foods etc. Other than this weekend, I really don't drink any more alcohol at the w/e (only drink about 3 units a week anyway), I don't have more caffeine/white bread/spicy food. None of which have ever been a problem in the past either.

I have 1 yakult a day.

Actually, I do remember feeling like this for a month when DD was around 7mths old, 2mths after I stopped breastfeeding her. I stopped feeding DS almost 2mths ago (he's 1 this week) Hormonal changes can't affect you like this, can they?

I'm really not stressed, other than the usual stress of coping with 2 young kids

Still have stomache ache today, as if I'm full of wind + period pain like feeling (but no wind and no AF) but the nausea has gone.

It's doing my head in!!! And why do I feel the GP will just fob me off...

dh had this
they thought he might have some very virulent bug or an ulcer

In the end he took probiotics and it sorted it out

amazonianwoman · 10/03/2008 18:33

What kind of probiotics countessdracula?

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 10/03/2008 18:35

solgar extra strength acidophilus I think

3littlefrogs · 10/03/2008 18:38

Have you considered the possibility of giardia lamblia? This can be picked up in your water supply and affects some people more than others. It is not that uncommon in the UK. It can be spread by either dogs or cats, (but I can't think which at the moment - sorry - not very helpful). It is easily cured by a specific treatment, but is extremely difficult to diagnose - (due to having to examine stool specimen under microscope at precisely the right moment to see it).

CountessDracula · 10/03/2008 18:39

or campylobacter

amazonianwoman · 10/03/2008 18:42

Thanks, will try the Solgar.

Will google giardia lamblia, never heard of it. One of our cats has just had worms (yuck) but then they often do as they're always out scavenging, we treat them regularly though. Would be good excuse to rehome them (only joking, cat lovers)

OP posts:
moominsmummy · 10/03/2008 18:45

I was also thinking Campylobacter - I had this - felt fine for a few weeks then D&V all of sudden

I would actually AVOID probiotics as they are dairy based and dairy is not good if you have a bug

see your GP and get a sample of poo tested - he'll be able to prescribe the right antibiotics if necessary
