I think the symptoms you describe could also be attributable to a urine infection.

WigWamBam · 10/03/2008 15:34

Not all prostate problems are cancer.

But I think he should be seen as an emergency - ring them back.

Tutter · 10/03/2008 15:35

unusual in a young man

dh had odd weeing symptoms and saw a spcialist - turrned out to be a cyst on the bladder

morningpaper · 10/03/2008 15:35

Why can't you get a GP appointment for 2 weeks?

Tutter · 10/03/2008 15:36

when i say young, i mean younger than 50s, 60s, 70s

cmotdibbler · 10/03/2008 15:37

How old is your husband ?

Prostate cancer is very unusual in men under 55.

It is much more likely to be benign prostate hyperplasia (just the prostate getting bigger with age), or an irritable bladder where its spasming and causing the sudden urge to pee and loss of control.

Could also be a urine infection or prostatits (infection of prostate).

Can you not see anyone at the GP sooner ? And infection could do with treating.

LittleMissNorty · 10/03/2008 15:41

Does your GP not have emergency appointments - I always say we need to see a doctor today...."can't it wait"...."no"....."ok, can you come in at 10am"....if it is an infection, he needs ABs

vannah · 10/03/2008 15:44

he is 35.
hopeless surgery. 2 weeks time was the earliest normal one available...I was furious Guess he will have to go in as an emergency.

Some areas offer free screening or can he take a sample to the nurse for testing, most likely a uti or maybe a kidney stone. My dad has recnetly had treatemnt for it and he was considered young at 65+

cmotdibbler · 10/03/2008 16:23

35 is def too young for prostate cancer to be any sort of concern.

Screening is only available to over 55s

DettaJnr · 10/03/2008 16:34

It's most likely to be a urinary tract infection.

Go to GP. If you are worried about prostate cancer there are other symptoms which he would be experiencing and mention this to the GP. He can do a simple blood tests to determine his PSA levels. Also, a digital examination should also be done by GP. It's highly unlikely at his age but not unheard of either.

pushki · 10/03/2008 16:52

whilst it is less likely to be prostate cancer - it is not unknown, my brother was diagnosed at 39 - his symptoms were getting up at night to have a pee more often. Having said that do not want to raise undue alarm vannah, there are other more likely things it could be like a UTI, or prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) which will easily be cured once diagnosed.

As this week is Prostate Cancer Awareness Week I saw your post and as for example cmotdibbler (with respect ) had said "def too young for prostate cancer to be any sort of concern" - wanted just to raise a bit of awareness that whilst rarer, it can affect younger men in 30/40's. Still seen by many as 'an old man's disease' and therefore not always considered in younger men.

Hope you get an earlier appointment to put your minds at ease - good luck

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 10/03/2008 16:56

Far far far more common and likely than cancer is benign prostate hyperplasia which is when the gland grows in a non cancerous way and blocks the urinary tract. Very correctable, surgically.

But must more likely to be a UTI related issue at his age.
