ds 17mths was running in a corridor and tripped and head butted the botton of a door that has a ridge in it. He cried immedialtey but bump left mark no blood. Put a cold compress to it but he pushed it away while still crying. Took hm home and he wanted bf so did and he is now asleep. Have left him on sofa to keep an eye on him as was advised to not let him sleep by nursery worker. This ahs all happened in last 30 mins.

If I ring nhs direct will advise me to go to a &e i iamgine.

Any opinions would be appreciated

tia

the chances are he's probably fine, but it sounds like a nasty bump, and I would probably go to a&e.

TrinityRhino · 10/03/2008 13:30

In my opinion it doesn't sound like concussion
I'm amazed by how hard you have to hit your head to get concussion
Does he still havea soft spot even I little tiny one becuase then his bones in the skull can still mopve a little on impact which will help avoid concussion

does he normally slepp about now??

nelix2000 · 10/03/2008 13:31

hiya, keep an eye on him, see how he is when he wakes up, if he is just playing normally, watch out for any dizzyness, sickness and anything out of character. If you feel nhs direct would sent you to a&e why not just go for peace of mind?

clayre · 10/03/2008 13:31

i wouldnt let him sleep, tough one cos ds bumped his eye on the coffee table when he was 18mths and we took him to a&e and he didnt do anything just watched him playing!

LaylaandSethsmum · 10/03/2008 13:31

Not letting them sleep is out of date advice now, keeping a close eye on him is what you need to do, he wasn't knocked out so thats good, if he is not his usual self, becomes drowsy again or unrousable, or if hes sick or complaining of a bad headache then get him seen otherwise just keep an eye on him. HTH

artichokes · 10/03/2008 13:32

Is it normal for him to feel tired and sleepy at this time in the day? If not then I might worry a bit as sleepiness can be a sign of concussion.

luciemule · 10/03/2008 13:34

If it's not his usual nap time, then I'd take him to A&E but if he's sleeping due to the BF, just keep an eye on him like you're doing. Being sick is another sign of concussion.

Aaahh... the joys of boys !

DS1 was hit by a cricket bat last week and had a huge goose egg on his forehead. School rang and advised me to take him to hospital for a check up. I decided that seeing he was lucid and coherent (he is nearly 8) that I would take him home to keep an eye on him. He had a headache (obviously) and had a little sleep on the sofa.

In the mean time I did a bit of googling and found that it can be a good idea to let them sleep especially if they were upset about the accident, however if they were difficult to rouse and groggy then they would need medical help immediately.

NHS would advise you to go to a&e, and please do so if you are at all worried.

Unfortunately this probably wont be his first and last bump ....HTH

PotPourri · 10/03/2008 13:37

as others said, watch him to see if it is normal. If he normally sleeps, then probably fine. If not, then get him to A&E to check out. They are quite patient I have found - have had to take one or other of mine a few times. When he wakes, see if his eyes are moving correctly - i..e can he focus on a toy when you move it around? And ask him some questionst hat you know he will know the answer to -to check if he is #with it'.

And the big one si sick, or falling over/complaining of a sore head

LEMONADEGIRL · 10/03/2008 13:53

thanks ladies for the quick responses.

Have called nhs direct who confirmed it was okay to let him sleep after going through a check list. Also to keep an eye on him.

Ds is a real bruiser, he is going to give me grey hair at this rate

Thanks once again
