How high is the threshold for PIP. ?

Had my phone assessment today for PIP Took from 14.10 till 15.45

I have osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, blind in one eye and two other conditions that are debilitating

At the end of the assessment she said the criteria is very high which suggested I hadn't met it

How high is this criteria ?

It's not a question of how high is the criteria, it's a question of how much does it affect your life? For example, you can have all the health labels in the world but if it does not affect your way of life, then you would not qualify for any help with PIP.

I've gone from an active woman running, walking , yoga, to needing an adapted toilet seat

Had to hire home help

Can't get up stairs or down
Can't drive my manual car
Don't leave house
Been off sick 5 months

Assessment took ages , I got impression I didn't meet the criteria .

You can look at the points system online and mark your answers which would give you a good indication of your entitlement.. after that it's just a case of hoping that s/he didn't misconstrue your answers in any way. Although lots of people say they have been totally lied about on the assessment that wasn't my experience at all, it was all dealt with smoothly and quickly.

Fingers crossed you get the outcome you want.

It's affected my life to the point I do t get dressed or leave my house . I can't drive . I can't get my bank card out of my purse . I can't use stairs . I can't do laundry. I can't get trousers , socks , knickers or shoes on .

I still got impression I didn't meet criteria

Please also remember that if the DWP say "no" do not give up. Ask for mandatory reconsideration.

It's okay, I know how you feel. My life has been turned upside down in the space of 12 months. I have been awarded standard for both elements but 8 points for second part of mobility which means I can apply for a blue badge.

I could have gone back and asked for more but to be honest, I was so frazzled by the whole procedure, I just gratefully took what was offered.

Found it thank you

I think I'll not be eligible for daily living but I should get something for mobility

I've been having this argument with my colleague. I have MS. (Well controlled) so would t qualify. She is absolutely adamant that I would. She's keen to help me fill in the forms! It's not happening as I just don't need it.

capabilityfrowns · 01/11/2023 04:46

If you don't need it don't claim

Unfortunately I do need it .

They try and deny you at every stage. I think you should get points in the mobility side.
Plus daily living aswell. Preparing a meal, if your legs are so sore you can't stand and stir a wok for a long time, then yes that should get some points at least. Needs assistance to dress is 2 points.

Definitely appeal. If you have the mental strength!

My partner got it whilst he was waiting for back surgery. He was bed bound.

He had a telephone conversation and he said he felt like they were trying to trip him up on his answers. He had to keep saying the same thing over and over again.

It was exhausting he said and felt like an inquisition.

We were so shocked when he was awarded it. He only claimed it for a few months. It took them 4 months to speak to him but it wasn't backdated.

It's a bizarre system

I felt like the assessor manipulated the process. She asked about a good day but not a bad or even average day and when I questioned her she said I had told her during the process. My application was for asd, I scored 8 on social/ communication but she didn't score any thing on any other areas so I didn't get it even though that area is highly affected whereas the physical aspects are less affected.

The difficulty is that the way you are describing your disability doesn't fit in with the descriptors. For example 'can't get my bank card out of my purse' doesn't fit any of the care descriptors. However, if those same difficulties cause you problems with cooking, you might get points.

You have to look at each descriptor and think about your difficulties and how they fit.

'I don't get dressed' doesn't score points. 'I can't get trousers, knickers, socks or shoes on' gets 2 points.

It's a matter of scoring enough pints for an award. They should not only consider whether you can do an activity but whether you can do it reliably, repeatedly within a reasonable timeframe. One of the keys to a successful application is providing medical evidence showing you have difficulties with the activities they look at as obviously when they aren't doing face to face assessment hardly at all then they need proof that you have difficulties. They will also look at medications, whether you are on strong painkillers, having treatments etc.
I'm frequently amazed at how some people don't get awarded anything, so do ask for an MR if you aren't awarded. Then others seem to get it awarded very easily.
