Well, just that, really! I'm aware that you bleed after, and it can be rather off and on. We're going to Center Parcs at the beginning of April, and will be swimming a lot. Would it be likely that I'd still be bleeding, and therefore unable to swim? I have a 3 1/2 year old (disabled) and a 15 month old, and can't expect dh to take them both swimming (also, probably not allowed!). And I just want to be able to swim for MY sake! So, do I get it done on Wednesday (when my appointment is booked), or do I cancel, and get it done when I get back? HELP!!

Am thinking of having Mirena coil fitted, so am watching this thread with interest!

BlaDeBla · 10/03/2008 11:00

You've got 3 weeks for it to settle in. If you keep your appointment you can ask the doc in the clinic what they think.

Do people go swimming with mooncups? I don't see why not. It may be worth thinking about that. I have a mooncup which I find a bit messy but it does the trick. Lots of people here love them!

If you are not going to get the coil fitted now, you should still go to your appointment to sort out alternative contraception!

Has anyone else had problems with the Mirena coil?
I had it fitted a year next month and yes, I had the expected 'spotting' for 6 weeks, then that stopped, but then started again... It did settle down for a few months and it was great! no real periods. Since the beginning of November I had had a continuous and at times extremely heavy bleed and until 6 days ago, I'd only had 14 days of no bleeding at all. I was wondering if it could be because I'm still breast feeding with of course all those hormones associated with that on top of the coil hormones.
Some of my friends in total contrast, have been using the Mirena for years and have rarely had a bleed at all. So perhaps it's just the luck of the draw.
Any idea's please?

Sorry, I meant to post on a new thread, didn't mean to hijack mum2seb

I had mirena fitted and I had on off bleeding for about 4 months or so. You can still use tampons of course so no reason why you can't go swimming.

I've had it removed now ... although I wasn't having any period to speak of, I would still have terrible cramps and just felt like I had dreadful PMT a lot of the time. I was snappy and miserable. Dr thinks I am v.sensitive to progesterone. Had it removed, feel much better. Back on normal combined pill and much prefer it. But that's just me.

mum2seb · 10/03/2008 14:31

Thanks! So I can use a tampon? A friend of mine said I couldn't use one for 6 weeks afterwards - I'll ask the doctor! I have a mooncup, too - perhaps that'd be preferable? I have heard that they leave the strings quite long until you go and get it checked for the first time (after 3 weeks?), so that's perhaps why they don't like you using tampons?
Don't worry, solo - it's good to hear somebody else's experience! I'm still breastfeeding - just twice a day now, though (6am and 7pm). It'll be interesting to know if it makes a difference to how long it'll take to settle! My Mum tells me that she struggled for 18 months with the copper coil before it settled - but she persevered! I don't think I could last that long!

i just had mine fitted today. was so glad i had brought along dh, as it was quite painful (esp when they measured the cervix/uterus), and i got the shakes after.
the gp and nurse who fitted it said that normally any bleeding you have shouldn't be as heavy as a period (mine are really heavy), and usually women do not require tampons. it doesn't say anything about it in the leaflet...
my check is in 6 weeks time.

wishingchair, that exactly why i have been a bit hesitant to get my coil fitted: on the progesterone only pill i felt absolutely awful, so am a bit concerned about the progesterone in the coil... gp told me that its effect is very local, so shouldn't give as much of a problem as a pill does... i guess we'll have to wait and see how i'll do on the coil. am hoping it will be ok, as dh has offered to have the snip in stead, but i am so much in doubt if really i wouldn't want another baby.

mum2seb, i am also still breastfeeding twice a day (ds2 is 2y3mo), so i'll be following this thread to see if anyone comes along who's got any experience with mirena and breastfeeding.

solo · 10/03/2008 16:56

Thanks mum2seb!
Being almost 44, I feel I'm too old to take the pill(if I weren't breast feeding), so I'm not sure what to do for the best,I do though, since having the Mirena get spots on my face and along my hairline and in other places on my body. I've also had rotten headaches. I only had it fitted so that himself would feel comfy knowing no more babies, but he doesn't touch me anyway. Be just my luck to have it removed and he decide to get close again.

Scoobi6 · 10/03/2008 21:49

My mood was awful for about 6 weeks after mine was fitted. Can't remember about the bleeding sorry, but I know plenty of people have trouble with the hormones for a while when they are first fitted. Do a search on here for more.

I now love it, and wouldn't have it taken out, but at the time I was sobbing in the GP's office , caused serious problems with DH, I was dreadful. So I'd wait until after holiday tbh, in case of side effects in the first few weeks. Would deffo get it fitted tho, it was worth it in the end - no PMT, and no AF!

LittleMissTickles · 10/03/2008 21:56

I'd wait until after the holiday too, I had light bleeding for 4-5 weeks after. Has been terrific since then though, pretty much no periods at all!
