Do you just ride-out tonsillitis (with white patches) / strep throat?

Or do you need antibiotics. White patches on both tonsils, temp of 39, feel fucking awful and horrendous week at work ahead so wondering what to do. Ride it out or do you need antibiotics when there are white patches? Id have to get an urgent gp slot so it’s no easy thing.

thanks x

Your doctor should swab your throat and culture the swab to make sure it's strep.

This can be done instantly in the office, and the swab result can be confirmed in a lab afterwards.

I have never had a positive result from the instant test, but the lab has always confirmed strep.

I've never had mine swabbed (U.K.) they don't do it

No you don’t need antibiotics. I had the exact same in September. You can get a special mouthwash to gargle with if you want but rest/fluids/gargling with salt water should do the trick.

IHateLegDay · 30/10/2023 09:28

Antibiotics!!

mathanxiety · 30/10/2023 18:55

Yes, you should go to your doctor, OP.

DoYouAgree · 30/10/2023 18:58

I can never fight it off once the white patches start and the fever,
So much better to get the antibiotics and it will shift so much quicker.
Like someone else it's always bacterial and not viral.

Yes, still go

Covidwoes · 31/10/2023 20:56

How did you get on OP?

wildwestpioneer · 31/10/2023 21:44

I used to get tonsillitis a lot in my 20s and always ended up taking antibiotics, especially if I was in a lot of pain with a temperature. What I also did was put bongella on a cotton bud and dabbed it on the white patches / ulcers which meant I could at least eat

Kat22 · 31/10/2023 21:51

Yes see the doctor. I had temperature plus sore throat. Temperature then went, leaving a very sore throat. Dr very reluctantly gave me antibiotics but that same night I ended up in hospital with quinsy. I might have been able to avoid hospital if I’d got them sooner.

You need antibiotics. The white patches will grow and drip toxins down into your stomach and you’ll be vomiting soon if you aren’t already.

SplendidUtterly · 01/11/2023 11:19

I usually give gargling with salt water or listerine a go first of all.
It usually does the trick, but after a few days, and if its still not any better I'd probably make a doctors appointment.

Or the OP doesn’t because her fever broke and is hopefully feeling much better now!

Did you have antibiotics in the end OP?
