What could this be?

What could this be?

For just over a week for my first meal of the day I’ve been getting really severe tummy cramps, nauseous, feel like I might be sick - but it’s more the pain of the cramps rather than a desire to be sick. Sometimes, but not always accompanied by a bowel movement.

I was diagnosed with IBS over 15 years ago but it’s generally stress related. This is really odd. I’ve tried eating earlier, eating different foods and the outcome is the same.

It passes after a couple of hours. But it’s so uncomfortable at the time. Eating any subsequent meal doesn’t seem to trigger the same response.

How old are you? Any chance you’re pregnant?

I’m 33. There’s always a chance but it seems slight - I’ve had a period and my DH has had the snip.

I feel it’s probably more to do with my digestive tract.

Any medication changes? Have you changed your diet at all? How much are you eating in the evening? If it’s happening in the morning it could be related to what your body is digesting overnight

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I usually eat my last meal/snack around 7pm. I haven’t noticed a difference between eating a lot in the evening - like sitting snacking on junk or when I don’t really eat anything after 5pm.

Ive been calorie restricting so mostly I have been sticking to around 1500 cals. I usually eat 5-7pm and then again around 11 so there can be quite a long period. I’m wondering if it might be that?

Classic IBS - I know it well. Eating, especially first thing in the morning, triggers gut activity which in IBS can be highly exaggerated. I find that introducing food slowly is good - a sip and a bite here and there to let the gut get used to it.

Thank you, Ive had IBS for sometime but it’s either stress related (in which case it comes on very quickly) or related to me eating wheat/gluten. Which I have now cut out (and have done for actually 20 years (not 15 am older than I realised). It feels like when I was first poorly all that time ago and wasn’t managed. I’ve tried eating different things, ie it was Greek yog, fruit nuts the first time so today had salmon and eggs.

Ive only had quite small meals but definitely worth giving it a go, having a mouthful and back to it.

As I write I realise I’m often only eating for a 5-8 hour window. Could unintentionally fasting be causing it?

I think definitely could be, especially if it’s something you’ve only recently started. Also the calorie restriction could have something to do with it, unless that’s something you’ve been doing for a while. The only other thing I can think of is are you drinking enough or too much fluid? Maybe try and spread out your eating a bit more like small healthy snacks every couple of hours or up your intake. I know it’s tough when you’re trying to lose weight though, sometimes you just can’t win!

I’ve been eating reduced calories for about 3 months. I drink quite a lot - water though not alcohol?

And no you can’t win! I will try and maybe have some toast or oats for my first meal?

it was really bad the day after I did have some wine and rich food.
