Washable Sanitary Towels

I get really sore using disposable sanitary towels, and have been thinking about changing to reusables. But I don't know where to start! Does anyone use them and have any recommendations?

Please don't turn this into an argument on the rights and wrongs of disposable sanitary protection ...

FC, sorry to take so long to reply- absolutley NO risk of it dislodging or falling out! The only real knack is getting it properly positioned, so that the cup is over the cervix (a bit like a cap), or the blood can leak out round the side. But then again my anatomy isn't altogether normal in that area, so maybe no-one else has that problem

FimboCLAUS · 18/12/2004 20:01

Thanks again MTM no more questions I promise!! This has been a real idea opener. I think I will buy one and have a go!!

I can't get my head round the mooncup, I certainly don't much like the idea of it, but I'm really interested in the reusable pads - thanks carrieg and jimjams for the info.

sorry bit gross- but the mooncup has a series of small holes near the top (to help break the seal when you remove it) so if it gets too full then it can leak through those as well (just in case you get unexplained leaks). I'm not into feeding my plants or painting with my menstrual blood (- see the website) but definitely prefer the mooncup over tampons and washables over disposables now. Dh is vaguely horrified by the whole thing but he copes Good luck Fimboclaus (nothing to lose you get 3 months free trial- 3 momths as it takes about 2 or 3 months to get to grips with it ime) and wigwambam.

WigWamBam · 18/12/2004 21:55

Feeding your plants? I must have missed that bit ... I fancy them even less now!

Seriously, I have never really got on with tampons, they also make me sore and I could never position them properly, which is why I don't really fancy the idea of the mooncup - would you say that it was still worth trying, if it's easier to use than tampons?

I wouldn't say it was easier to use than tampons. It's as easy to use once you're used to it (and you don't have to empty it as often as you would have to change tampons so once its in you can forget about it for longer). If you wanted to have a go you can try it and return it to get your money back if you don't get on with it so might be worth a try. (Don't worry you cut a stalk thing off when you get it so they can't send you a used one ). I found getting it out the tricky bit to master- bearing down helps a lot.

Feeding the plants did turn my stomach a bit as well- had visions of loads of flies. yuck!

You've just put me right off my biscuit jimjams. Serves me right for being up at this time of the morning.

DingWongMerrilyOnHigh · 19/12/2004 05:45

what are you doing up at this time of the morning apart from eating biscuits young lady?

Jimjambells · 19/12/2004 08:53

Never stray into a mooncup thread whilst eating a biscuit

Have ordered one to try as part of my new years resolutions. And some washable pads.

Haven't yet justified the cost to DH by the saving we'll make on baby bio.

Will be back to ask more questions later!

i love my mooncup
after day one i am really light and tampons just used to dry me up. after day one i leave my mooncup in for 24 hours, remove it when i'm in the shower, rinse and forget about it gain til tomorrow.
you can buy one then if you rae not happy with it, return it to them within 3 months and you get your money back (they then resell them as swim caps for Barbie - see other thraed)
they come in 2 sizes, A for thise who haven't given birth vaginally, and B for those who have. no danger of them falling out.

WigWamBam · 22/12/2004 22:51

SantaQuated - please tell me you're joking about them selliing used Mooncups as Barbie swim caps?

there's something to be said for being post menopausal

If anyone is thinking about using washables, I can heartily recommend Christine at Plush Pants . She's really helpful and my order arrived within 2 working days.

I'm using the Wemoon pads that she sells (I wimped out of buying the leopardprint ones, but was very tempted!), they are fabulous. They're soft, far more comfortable than disposables, slimline, and laundering them is no bother either. They stay lovely and dry, and I've had no leaks at all - which is most unusual for me. I was very sceptical about the claim that periods are often lighter when using reusables ... but it does certainly seem that way to me.

I never thought I'd ever get excited over sanitary protection, but I can't recommend these enough.
